Why won't photos enlarge any more?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am using the “Manifest” theme (not sure if this matters). On posts published prior to the change in the way photos were uploaded, readers can click on a photo to see it isolated and enlarged; this gives them an added option of clicking a second time to enlarge the photo even further to see small details.

BUT… on posts published after the change (I think that’s when it happened), when a reader clicks on a photo (and I’ve been telling them all along to click to enlarge) they are simply taken to what LOOKS like a page in the blog (it has my header, but it isn’t a page that can be accessed from my dashboard) and they see the photo and caption. Above the photo is a title (IMG_0466, etc … I haven’t been titling them because no one ever saw the title), below it are thumbnails of the photos before and after it in the “gallery,” and a link that returns them to the blog post.

There is no actual benefit to this; it’s exactly what they see within the blog post itself.

I have checked every setting I know to check, but nothing seems different. When I am in the media library, which includes both the photos that enlarge and the ones that do not, every setting appears to be the same. I’m a little frustrated, especially since the first method (photos that appear enlarged, separately, and will enlarge again) was preferable to me. And because I’m not particularly excited about having to go thru to title dozens of photos. :)

    What am I doing wrong?

There were changes made to image handling over 3 weeks ago now https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/changes-to-media-handling?replies=1

If you want the picture to open larger, choose Media File so it will link the image to its original, full-size version.

oops! sorry about posting that same link twice :(

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you for such a quick response. :)

And yeah, I saw the “Changes to Media Handling” but it says nothing about my issue. (That I can see. Sometimes I miss things.) I could tell that that was when the change occurred.

I *have* chosen to link to Media File (actually, I think that’s the default). So that isn’t helping either.

Reading the third link helps me understand that what I’m seeing is an “attachment page”—but I shouldn’t be seeing that, since I am choosing to link to the media file.

What I am GUESSING happened is some kind of programming error/disagreement with the theme I use. I hope not. I hope it’s something simple. None of the links here actually answer the question, although I’ve learned some new terminology, so that’s great! THANK YOU! Got any other ideas? :)

For what it’s worth, I’m having the same issue, and it started at the same time. I’ve been wandering around in support topics but can’t find a solution either. Help!

  • Unknown's avatar

Yay. What theme are you using? I still think it might be a disagreement in the code.

My older posts, by the way, still work correctly; those photos will enlarge. The things users can control have remained the same … and yet things are behaving differently. So the problem seems to be in something we cannot control. Is there a way to speak directly to a tech at WordPress?

Tom Reeder, I think I’ve found the solution. There may be a better way, and it will be time-consuming.

You have to load all the images and publish your post. Then choose EDIT from your list of posts. Click on an image, which then gives you two icons in the upper left hand corner: the tiny thumbnail, and the red cancel icon. Choose the thumbnail.

This brings up a new window. At the top it says “Edit Image” and “Advanced Settings.” Down the left side you can choose size: 130% 120% 110% etc.

Below the photo, see “Link URL.” EVEN THOUGH when you were originally uploading this image you (and I) chose “Link to Image” (and it didn’t work), CHOOSE IT AGAIN, HERE.

Click update. This returns you to the post itself.

Now click to update the post.

This should make that one photo enlargeable. Now you’ll have to do it to all of them. I haven’t experimented to see If I can change ALL the photos and then update the post (yet).

It’s a very time-consuming way to have to fix this WordPress error, but until I figure out a way to bring this to their attention, at least you and I will know. :)

Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to give me these tips. It’s cumbersome, but until they get it fixed, it’s a way to display our images in a way that blog visitors can actually see them.

Thanks again, wanderlustful3. Just for that, I plan to visit your blog frequently!

    Tom —

Since I posted that, I have attempted to link-then-update several photos at once and it does work. Sometimes user error creeps in. :) You have to update both places to avoid that. I’m usually doing this late at night after my real work so you can imagine the frequency of error. (sigh)

The fact that we had to figure this out on our own (and learning from you that I wasn’t the only one with this problem was encouraging in itself) isn’t particularly encouraging. The forum system (as opposed to honest-to-God technical support) doesn’t really work for me. It’s a time thing.

I’m so glad you responded, as your blog wasn’t linked to your comments here, but it showed up when WP notified me of your response. I’ll be reading yours, too, since travel is what I live for. :) As time goes on I’ll be populating the archives of Wanderlustful with material from earlier trips, in case you’re interested. I haven’t been to nearly as many places as y’all, however. Was hoping for dining recommendations in Dublin. :)

I see we also have writing in common. You might be interested (well, maybe) in my professional blog, also WP but self-hosted, so not in this community here. ReadPlayEdit.com, just in case.

    All the best,
    Jamie
