Why won't sites w/custom domain names recognize my WP login?

  • Unknown's avatar

Last month WP sites with custom domain names (e.g. wattsupwiththat.com) stopped recognizing my WP logon and I can’t comment as a WP blogger. When I attempt to comment I don’t see the ‘verdeviewer: You are commenting using your WordPress.com account’ line that I see when commenting to a ‘.wordpress.com’ blog. If I click on the (W) logon logo, a window quickly opens and closes, then the line appears. But when I try to post the comment, I get an error message ‘You are being asked to login because [my email address] is used by an account you are not logged into now.’ I then enter my password, but my comment does not have a link to my blog, nor does it appear in ‘my comments’ in my blog admin. Sites that require me to be logged in do not accept my comments, instead giving an error ‘Sorry, you must be logged in to post comments.’

I am logged in. I see 9 wordpress.com cookies, including ‘wordpress_logged_in’ and ‘wordpress_test_cookie.’ So what’s causing this? How can I fix it?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I was briefly able to post at a WP blog requiring login, but that has again ended.

This is not right. Doesn’t anyone at WordPress know why this is happening?

Something that’s happened twice now at judithcurry.com:

The blog doesn’t recognize I’m logged in. On the page I click “Log in”, which takes me to my own blog admin, where there no doubt I am already logged in. I then return to judithcurry.com and am immediately redirected to judithcurry.com/remote-login.php, where I see the error message “Invalid key [8].” and a “Back” link to curryja.wordpress.org.

Doesn’t anyone at WordPress know what would cause this invalid key error and why it would suddenly start happening?

I have no idea but it happened to me last week. I could not comment and could not follow a blog with a custom domain. In order to follow, I went to the Reader and added in the blog’s name and that worked.

It may be a cookie-thing, but I really don’t know.

Thanks for the suggestion, dandelionsalad. Unfortunately it had no effect. I still could not comment at judithcurry.com, which would not recognize that I was logged into WordPress.

I added the tag “modlook” to this thread, hopefully someone from Staff will respond, although it is now the weekend.

I’m having trouble with the “Like” button now. It may have something to do with WP’s cookies.

As for the invalid key error, I’m thinking that’s not relevant. I was mistakenly trying to log in to judithcurry.com, not my own blog, and was rightfully refused.

Thanks again. I’m not blocking first-party cookies, but I am blocking access to some web addresses judithcurry.com accesses, including pixel.wp.com. But when I stop blocking those addresses, my logon is still not recognized.

Hopefully someone from Staff can help both of us out on this issue.

  • @verdeviewer
When you are on those sites, do you see the black admin bar at the top of the screen? If you don’t see that, it means your login is not being tracked correctly across sites.

Have you tried deleting all cookies stored in your browser? The login cookie might be corrupt or expired, which could cause this.

Another option is a connection problem. I’ve experienced that if my connection is poor, sometimes a site will load, but the admin bar and like buttons won’t show even though I’m logged in. In those cases resetting my router or force-refreshing the page (Ctrl-F5 on Windows) usually fixes it.

Can you please expand on “having trouble with the Like button”? The questions and advice above might apply to you as well.

If not, it might be easier to troubleshoot that issue in a separate thread. Please create a new one if you hadn’t already and modlook it or paste the link here so I can find it. Thanks :)

Thanks, kokkieh. I think the two are related and have something to do with cookies. I will try again tomorrow.

Thanks for the suggestion, kokkieh, but I had previously deleted cookies to no avail, and ’twas no solution when I tried it again.

I tried other WP sites. Those in the wordpress.com domain have the black admin bar across the top, those with custom domain names do not.

    hro001.wordpress.com, bobtisdale.wordpress.com/ have the bar. wptavern.com, torontostandard.com do not.

All fixed for me today: the Follow button, Like button and ability to comment.

I had to allow the public-ap.wordpress.com cookie on Privacy Badger that was formerly blocking that cookie. Also put in an exception for the particular blog in my browser’s Allowed Cookies section.

    Thanks again, kokkieh.

Alas, my issue does not seem so easy to resolve as dandelionsalad’s.

After deleting cookies and logging back on, there are 11 wordpress.com cookies (a number that has been as high as 16 and as low as 9) plus 2 public-ap.wordpress.com cookies. There are duplicates of the wordpress and wordpress_sec cookies, the only difference being the path for one is /wp-content/plug-ins and the other is /wp-admin. There is also a wpc_wpc cookie that has my username, email, and blog address.

I wonder if this is a plug-in issue. Do blogs with custom domain names all have a plug-in not used for wordpress.com blogs?

  • @verdeviewer

    hro001.wordpress.com, bobtisdale.wordpress.com/ have the bar. wptavern.com, torontostandard.com do not.

Neither wptavern nor torontostandard are WordPress.com sites, but both are self-hosted WordPress.org sites. On those two sites you won’t see the admin bar, and if the “comment with WordPress.com” option doesn’t work it’s most likely due to settings on those sites.

As WordPress.org sites are not hosted with us, your login can’t be tracked on those sites and we have no control over any aspect of those sites.

Do blogs with custom domain names all have a plug-in not used for wordpress.com blogs?

The only difference between WordPress.com sites with free domains and with custom domains are that we don’t provide SSL certificates for custom domains. Sometimes browsers, and especially Chrome, treats it differently if you visit the sites via an http vs https connection.

    Thanks again, kokkieh.

Neither wptavern nor torontostandard are WordPress.com sites

Ah, I see, should’ve looked to the bottom line. Got those off a “best of WordPress blogs” page.

    Judithcurry.com and wattsupwiththat.com are WordPress.com blogs.

At no time does the black admin bar appear on these blogs.

As noted above, when I click the WordPress logo in a comment box on judithcurry.com, a pop-up window briefly appears, after which the comment box says I am posting as verdeviewer using my WordPress account. I am not asked to log in, so some aspect of the process is recognizing me. But when I click the “Post comment” button, I get an error page saying I’m not logged in.

At wattsupwiththat.com, where anonymous posting is allowed, the same thing happens when I click the WP logo. The comment box says I’m posting as verdeviewer. But when I click on “Post Comment,” the wp-comments-post.php page tells me that “You are being asked to login because [my email address] is used by an account you are not logged into now.” If I enter my password and click “Log In” then my comment appears, but it is an anonymous comment and does not show up in my admin page “Comments I’ve made.”

Are you using Privacy Badger or another cookie-blocker program? It is the same on another browser?
