Why would a contributor suddenly be blocked from adding or accessing posts?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

As an administrator, I have a contributor that can no longer access their posts, nor add new ones. We have a private site and there is a padlock icon next to the site name for all of us. I don’t know what that means and can’t find any documentation on it. I’ve tried to add myself as a contributor to see what they might be seeing under a different WordPress account. But the private blog won’t show up in the different account’s site list after following all documented instructions.

It used to be that we needed to pay a subscription to have as many users on our private site as we have. The subscription option is no longer available. Do we need to pay the new Premium subscription?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Is it possible that you and the contributor have blocked email notifications?

On this page at the very bottom of the page you can block the email:
    https://wordpress.com/me/notifications

    Block Emails
__Block all email updates from blogs you’re following on WordPress.com
    “save changes”

    Please check there.

    No.

Is it possible that you and the contributor have blocked email notifications?

My email updates are not blocked. I checked as you instructed.

Why is there a padlock next to our blog name? What does that mean? Is there a way I can send you a screen shot?

    Thanks for your quick reply.

Private sites have that icon. See here https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Private sites have that icon. See here https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

I’ve read through these instructions and there is no mention nor picture of a padlock next to the site name for private sites.

I have been here for nearly 9 years. I predate all but one Support Staff member and all support docs. I have private blogs and they all have that icon.

You can have either a public or a private blog and there is no limitation on the total number of contributors to any blog. If you’d like to invite others to publish posts or help approve comments on your blog, you can invite them to be a Contributor, Editor, or Author. If you want users to receive updates each time you publish new content you can invite them to be a follower/viewer.

    See here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/ and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
Adding Viewers to a Private Site https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#adding-viewers-to-a-private-site

The person invited will have to register a WordPress.COM username account but does not need to register a blog. That requirement is because the software has to be able to differentiate between hackers and official users, and allow access only to those with username accounts and official roles on the blog to access the blog.

They will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If they are logged into their WordPress.com account, they will be taken directly to your blog. If not, they will be taken to the log-in screen, where they can either log in or create a new user account.

Note that users who create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.

As I said above this thread is tagged for Staff. What’s required is your patience as Staff work through all forum threads tagged for their attention and through all email support tickets in chronological order based on datestamps and timestamps – first posted first served, as would be expected.

How long it takes to clear the threads and support tickets depends on how many Happiness Engineers are working on them at any given point in time. It also depends on how complex the issues in each thread and ticket are are.

Please don’t bump your thread here by posting into it again, because it’s not in your best interest to post to it after it has been tagged for Staff help. Doing that moves the timestamp forward and it takes longer to get a response from them.

I have a contributor that can no longer access their posts, nor add new ones. …

Please provide the WordPress.COM username account of that contributor.

I’ve tried to add myself as a contributor to see what they might be seeing under a different WordPress account. But the private blog won’t show up in the different account’s site list after following all documented instructions.

Did you demote yourself from Admin to contributor status or did you invite yourself to be a contributor under a complete different username account and associated email address?

Those are examples the specific information Staff require to be able to assist you.

Thanks for your tips and experience. Decided to post in again anyway since you asked the questions. The WordPress.COM username of the contributor having problems is kharlamovamv.

Did you demote yourself from Admin to contributor status or did you invite yourself to be a contributor under a complete different username account and associated email address?

I invited myself to be a contributor under a completely different username account and associated email address.

    Great! Thanks for those answers.

I invited myself to be a contributor under a completely different username account and associated email address.

    What is that username account?

All you need after posting it is patience. :)

    What is that username account?

Like I said in my previous reply:

The WordPress.COM username of the contributor having problems is kharlamovamv.

Here is some further information from this user/contributor who is on the other side of the world from me:

    “I don’t know what am I doing wrong but I can’t enter New > Post as I
    don’t see the dropdown menu.”

“I’m so upset. … it’s impossible to open My site as usual. This is the problem. On the tag Liahona Local Pages there is a sign of a lock… I’ll ask our Lithuanian editor to send my Ukrainian and Russian issues as there is no time and then, please tell me what I shall do.”

Thank you so much for tagging this for the WordPress staff to look at. I understand what the lock means now (a private site). We will be patient.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I saw that username account kharlamovamv and I thought you had also sent yourself an invitation to be a contributor under a different username account and email address too. That is why I asked.

Please tell your friend not to worry. Staff will sort this when they work their way forward to this thread and there is no need to be upset.

  • Unknown's avatar

I thought you had also sent yourself an invitation to be a contributor under a different username account and email address too. That is why I asked.

    Ah. That username is jdh-contributor.

Thanks for the clarification, as well as your time and patience in teasing out the essential information for WordPress.com staff to help us.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ah. That username is jdh-contributor.

Okay now all your ducks are in a row. :)

All that is needed is patience while waiting for Staff to get here and sort this out.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi @hopkinsjd,

I logged in as both hopkinsjd and jdh-contributor, and I was able to see the site liahonalocalpages.wordpress.com on their account. To clarify, you do not need to purchase the Premium bundle to add users to your account.

For the lock, are you referring to this icon?

    http://d.pr/i/H3ly

If so, that is the mark of a private blog as Timethief mentioned. Can you try to ask the contributors if they can see this Dashboard?

    https://liahonalocalpages.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you Jeremey. You should know that not long after my posts above, I communicated the above information to others in my organization. But one of them, who is also an administrator of liahonalocalpages, got the news a little too late and paid the premium fee. I was then able to add jdh-contributor to the site and it worked just fine. So that’s why you were able to log on with it. We are waiting to hear if the user kharlamovamv is also able to access and add posts as they did before, like jdh-contributor.

It is possible that I might have been able to add jdh-contributor before the Premium subscription was paid. It took me a couple of tries even then, but I finally got the right order of events. They key was to log out of my hopkinsjd account first, then log in as jdh-contributor, and then click on the Accept button in the invitation email. I don’t remember if I had tried that order of events before the fee was paid. I only remember logging out of all WordPress accounts, and then pressing the Accept email button, which did not work in either case. So I can’t verify for certain that adding a contributor to this blog, using the right order of events, worked before the fee was paid. Is there a way to refund the money and try again?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yep! I’m happy to refund the Premium bundle so we can give this another try (the bundle shouldn’t be necessary). However, I’ll need the request to come directly from the user account that purchased the upgrade. Could you ask that user to open a new forum thread here?

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

Let me know once they’ve done that!
