Why would content register as 'saved' and then NOT be visible?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m having trouble getting seven words of new text to load into the ‘about’ section. I see the content in my editable ‘profile’ view but it is NOT externally visible.

Other changes I’ve made have loaded immediately WITHOUT problem.

I have cleared the cache–made NO difference.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Where exactly are you trying to make changes: your about page or the about section in your profile settings? Note that changing something in the profile settings has no influence on what happens on the page. If you want that content to appear on your blog you’ll need to add the Gravatar Profile Widget to your sidebar. https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/gravatar-profile-widget/

If it’s changes to the page that won’t save, which editor are you using? The new or the classic? (Classic is the one at WP-Admin ->Pages ->All Pages) Try using the other editor from the one you’re using instead.

I am working in the “About” file inside my WordPress site in the editing mode.

I made text corrections in the second paragraph which promptly showed on the external view of the site.

Working in exactly the same location, simply making changes to the first paragraph rather than the second paragraph, I SEE the new text in the editing mode, AND the site ACCEPTS the new content with the SAVE command–but, after multiple attempts, it simply does NOT show up in the external view.

    Completely puzzled.

  • Thanks for explaining. My first guess would be browser cache, but you say you’ve already tried that.

Which editor are you using? The new editor (one with the blue toolbar) or the WP-Admin one (with the black toolbar and wp-admin in the URL)? Have you tried checking what happens if you use the other one as I suggested above?

Just to make sure we’re on the same page (sorry, couldn’t resist) you’re talking of the page at this link? https://independentresources.wordpress.com/about/

  • One other thing: If possible, please check if the page updates if you use a different browser. If we know it happens in only one/multiple browsers it might help narrow down the cause.

Yes, we’re on the same page–you have the correct URL.

When I used your URL to confirm the above, it took me straight into the BLUE editing area. I then added my new copy, SAVED, and looked at the page and it looked just fine. Wonderful.

Then I logged out and went back to look again and I still have the same problem. NOT so wonderful.

    for ref the copy is:

…National Medical Association, Pacific Resources for Education and Learning, Pacific Trade Group, Pelagic Fisheries Research Program, …

Middle two entries are the copy I’m trying to add, first and last entries indicate location in existing text.

I am working in Firefox. I went into Outlook and had the same issue.

I went in, added the copy, SAVED (using BLUE editor), looked at the PREVIEW, it was fine. Logged out and came back to the site and the copy is STILL NOT VISIBLE.

Not sure on how to access the alternative BLACK editor.

  • Sorry for taking so long to respond – different time zones; I was asleep :)

When I used your URL to confirm the above, it took me straight into the BLUE editing area.

That link should have taken you to the page itself, not the editor, so that sounds a bit strange to me.

Not sure on how to access the alternative BLACK editor.

For the classic editor, go to http://independentresources.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ and click on Pages ->All Pages and edit your post via the Edit link there. If it works in that editor, then we know it’s most likely a bug in the new editor. If it doesn’t work in the classic editor either, then it’s something else.

Thanks for being so patient while we try to figure this out :)

“That link should have taken you to the page itself, not the editor, so that sounds a bit strange to me.”

I was completely surprised myself, and concerned, as it seemed to indicate that anyone following that link would have content access to the site.
    But it is what happened.

And now, following the link for the “black editor” (/wp-admin/) I again find that the link takes me “inside” to content access–although NOT directly to the “editor.” Under “Some helpful resources:” I go to “Your profile” to get to the editor.

ARE BOTH THESE LINKS SUPPOSED TO BYPASS THE NEED TO LOG IN WITH ID AND PASSWORD? BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE DOING…

THIS DOES NOT SEEM RIGHT TO ME.

Anyway, when I get to the “admin” editor I find the PROPERLY CORRECTED “ABOUT” TEXT–but when I go “outside” again to view the site the new copy is still missing.

The copy shows in the “editor” files–both–but does NOT show on the actual site…

    Houston, we have a problem…

Appreciate whatever help you may be able to offer.

    Best,

    Henry

  • ARE BOTH THESE LINKS SUPPOSED TO BYPASS THE NEED TO LOG IN WITH ID AND PASSWORD? BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE DOING…

Don’t be alarmed. The wp-admin link only works for you. If I click it I simply get a message that it’s not my account. If you click it while logged in, it will take you to your dashboard.

The first link I gave you should take you to the front page, though, not the editor page. Again, if I click it I get to the page itself, so no one has unauthorised access to your admin area.

It does seem that we’re dealing with some kind of bug here as it won’t update in either editor, so I’m tagging this for staff to follow up. Please be patient a little longer while waiting for them to respond.

    Hi Henry,

Are you editing the “About Me” section in your “My Profile” settings at https://wordpress.com/me ? I see you have very similar text saved there. The text you enter in that “About Me” section appears in your account’s profile, for example here: http://en.gravatar.com/independentresources

The text on the page at https://independentresources.wordpress.com/about/ is completely separate from that “About Me” section. That page needs to be edited in the page editor directly. One way to reach that page editor is to visit your page at https://independentresources.wordpress.com/about/ and click the “EDIT” link near the bottom of the page (just above the “Leave a Reply” section). Alternately, you can view your list of pages at https://wordpress.com/pages and click on the “About” page there to edit the text on that page.

Change you make in the “About Me” section at https://wordpress.com/me won’t affect the page at https://independentresources.wordpress.com/about/ and vice versa. If you have any further questions or trouble with that, please let me know!

    Thank you Kokkieh and Rachmcr!

I actually finally resolved the issue last night (HST) and thought I had posted my appreciation for the guidance from Kokkieh last night–although I don’t see it in the thread… I was able to cure the problem following his path of “For the classic editor, go to http://independentresources.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ and click on Pages ->All Pages and edit your post via the Edit link there.”

Rachelmcr–I believe your path would also work and highlights some of my earlier errors and I appreciate your thoughtfulness as well.

    Best,

    Henry

ps. “Happiness Engineer” is a great title!

  • I’m glad to hear you got it working :)
