Widget access has changed and I am lost

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to add a new widgit but everything seems to have changed and now I don’t know how to create a widget, Also want to edit existing widgets but can’t get to view them to edit. What has happened I just learned how to manage the old way now I lost. The right sidebar heading is down at the bottom but I can’t get to it. Why is WordPress so hard and complicated to use?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Also the text (font) has changed size to very small and I didn’t do anything to change it from the original. I have searched and can’t find any instructions I understand to change the font back on my existing widgets. I am very frustrated and discouraged

    Hi Joanne!

I’m sorry you’re encountering that problem. I notice that you are using Internet Explorer to access your widgets. Can you please try clearing out your cache and cookies using the guide below?

    Solve Common Browser Issues

After you take that action, please take a look at Appearance → Widgets and let me know if you see anything different.

If it looks the same, open up your Dashboard in another browser such as Chrome or Firefox. Let me know if things look the same in these other browsers for you.

Lastly, when you are in Appearance → Widgets, click on the Screen Options tab located in the upper, right-hand corner of your browser window. You should see a link, “Enable accessibility mode.” If you do, you can close the tab, if you see “Disable accessibility mode,” please click that before closing the tab.

A couple final questions: Is it only the widget page that appears different to you, or other WordPress.com Dashboard pages as well? How about other non-WordPress websites?

We’ll get to the bottom of the issue for you. Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Hi

I clear my cache after every session and it is set to clear automatically when I close IE

Screen options when I click shows both Enable and Disable together I clicked on Enable nothing changed in my screen
I logged in on Google Chrome and was able to use my “Text” widget there so it must be IE that is the problem.
Now my only question is how do I correct the font in my widgets? It changed without me doing anything that I know of, I want the same size as in my blog. I also want the first line or title line to be bold.

Sorry I took so long in answering but I used the reply in my email rather than your reply at the bottom of your message (I didn’t see it til today)

The only other change I have noticed is when I want to download a photo the screen looks different for the library, it has changed but I did manage to figure it out.

All other websites I visit on a regular basis look the same with no changes.

Can’t figure this widget thing out. Also the print size of the widgets changed on its own to very small print a while back and I couldn’t figure out how to get the regular size back so I just gave up. On the old screen I could type in my info in the widget, preview it then I could rearrange the order of each widget by number which was excellent for updating my show commitments in date order for viewers so I can’t find that feature anymore either it went away with the old widget screen.

The message above is a little mixed up. I did an add on to the original reply but in the wrong place.
The latest reply starts: ” I logged on with Google Chrome” and ends with the “Sorry I took so long”
the balance of the message belongs to above that section. Hope it is clear for you

    Hi Joanne,

As it turns out, users with IE 9 have been experiencing issues using the widgets. This issue has been reported but it may be a while before it’s resolved.

Because that’s an older version of the browser, I’d strongly recommend that you update to the current version of IE, as over time you will continue to experience degraded performance with an outdated browser. You can also switch to using Chrome, which should resolve the issue with the widgets.

As far as the size of the widget text on the blog itself, there’s not much I can offer you there. The theme was retired some time ago, and while you can continue to use it, it isn’t being actively supported. I’m not sure why the text is small, but when I tested it, it appears that this is common to all blogs running this theme.

From here, you can either update your theme or you can use Custom Design to modify the CSS to increase the font size in the widget. Because this isn’t your fault and I can’t fix it for you directly, I’d be happy to give you a free year of Custom Design upgrade ($30) to make this happen, but you would need to renew it in the future. Let me know how you’d like to proceed.

As far as the other issues, we have made several changes recently to the post/page editor and widget interfaces, so some options will be a bit different.

    Hi Jackiedana
I would consider the custom design to modify I don’t want to try and change my whole site to another theme.
How complicated is the custom design to use, I am still finding it difficult to manage my current one.

Okay, I’ve upgraded your account to have Custom Design, which will allow you to modify the size of the text in your sidebar.

These two pages will explain the basics of Custom Design for you:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-css/

To modify your CSS, you would want to add the following code to your custom CSS area:

    #sidebar p {font-size: 1.3em;}

You can increase or decrease the 1.3em to adjust the size of the text to what looks best for your site.

Beyond that, if you want to make any other changes to that text or to anything else on your site, you can ask for further assistance in our CSS Customization forum:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization

Thankyou I will try it all out. I guess I am on a learning curve!

Will you be charging my credit card?

  • Unknown's avatar

You will have the upgrade until next April on us. If you wish to renew it, you can do so next year, or you can try out some of our new free themes in the meantime, and maybe find one you like even better. :)

Thankyou so much and I will let you know how I progress!!

Trouble again! When you switched to Cusom upgrade my widgets went to the bottom of the page. I have tried to get them back to where they were before (to the right of my blog) with no success. I have tried all the edit positions and they still are at the bottom of the page and not where I want them. Can you help? I am so confused something about “more”

  • Unknown's avatar

In addition they now appear faded grey rather than regular black like they used to be.

Adding the upgrade alone didn’t change your widgets, as that doesn’t in itself change anything on the site.

What you’re seeing now is a consequence of having added custom CSS.

If you need assistance with modifying the CSS to fit your design, you may wish to post in the CSS Customization forums for further design help: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization
