widget activation

I have found a widget that I want to install and activate. The instructions say to put the widget php file under wp-content/plugins/widgets; goes onto explain that I am then to activate the widget by going to wordpress site admin. 2 questions. First, where should the wp-content directory be – under program files? Next, I can not find “site admin” on wordpress – where is it? Any help is appreciated! Paul

I don’t know where the wp-content directory would be, but if your blog is a WordPress blog hosted anywhere other than WordPress.com, you need to be at WordPress.org. If your blog is hosted at WordPress.com, know that bloggers do not install our own widgets here. We choose from the selection we’re offered under Presentation — > Sidebar widgets. This is a security measure, as we’re on a shared blogging platform and an unsafe install by one person would effect all of us.

It’s for regular wordpress, not the wordpress multiuser that’s run here. You may want to take a few minutyes and read the stickies at the head of the forums. Best bet would be to submit a feedback on monday and suggest that it be installed and give your reasons why you would like to see it.

Which plugin are we talking about anyway?

It’s in the HTDOCS folder of your webserver. Inside that will be the WordPress blog folder….in there you’ll find wp-content…the rest should be straightforward. Basicly, log into your server via FTP, and the folder it’ll probably be in (at the server end) is HTDOCS….that’s your starting point.

Thanks – helpful. I am on wordpress.com. The widget is a flickr plugin that provides more control over which pics are displayed from a flickr account. I am also reading a piece right now on a wordpress image gallery plugin for embedding the gallery and pics right into wordpress: fgallery. I am assuming the same rules apply, but still reading…

I politely point you once again to the stickies at the head of the forums. They’re there for a reason. :)

Save yourself a lot of time and stop reading about plugins.
