widget doesn't show uploaded image
-
I’ve been regularly changing the ‘featured image’ image and text for months. But today for some reason, the uploaded image doesn’t appear when I put the URL from media library into the designated location. I feel as if I’ve done everything exactly the same – it’s after all very simple and direct. Why is the image not showing up??? It’s a jpg; it shows in the library; and I copied the URL. Actually, I tried it several times. Any suggestions would be gratefully received!!! thank you so much.

I see a purple backgroung image depicting a sketch of a female face at the top of your sidebar using Firwfox 10.0.2. Is that the one you mean?
If you can’t see it clear you browser cache and cookies.

Exactly which browser and version of it are you using please? If you don’t know click here to find out > http://whatsmyuseragent.com/
Do you have another browser you can try? -
No problem there – it’s the FEATURED IMAGE widget. The text/caption uploaded fine but I cannot get the image to show, even though the URL shows up in the widget line as always. Nothing has changed with browser; that doesn’t seem to be the issue.

tt-the widget I believe is lower down on the sidebar – “Featured Image”.
@womenwritingvt-Can you explain a little more about how and where you copied the text and image file name from? Did you write the text and add the file first to a draft post?

OK-I see now, you used the Image Widget. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/image-widget/ Make sure you don’t add any dimensions to the Image URL section, but mention it in the dimensions box. Also, that particular image is huge when all you want to display is a thumbnail. I’d resize and upload a smaller version for use in the widget. This also has the added benefit of keeping image clarity.

First I uploaded the image from my computer, edited it (it got turned sideways in the transition), made it the standard size I’ve been using all these months, and saved it in the media library.
Then I removed the URL from the previous ‘Featured Image’ and in its place copied the new one for the just-uploaded image, from its location inside my media library.
Then I wrote the text directly to the ‘caption’ line for the widget because I learned some time ago that was the best way to get the text under the image and have it show up on the sidebar.
Then I saved it; went to the site to check it out; and discovered the image had not loaded. So I repeated the initial steps, double checked the URL and tried again. Still no image
The reason this is remarkable is that I have been loading images from my computer and doing this Featured Image switch every couple of weeks for months without any problem at all. Can’t see any place within the widget to do it differently, it’s laid out so beautifully and clearly. Can’t figure out why the image is just not loading and/or showing up? It seems to be in the library with no problem . . .
Thanks so much for trying to figure this out with me.

Thanks so much! I hadn’t realized that uploading it larger would have such an impact – I DID resize it in the media library, but you were completely correct – resizing it BEFORE uploading seems to have done the trick!!
Many thanks. I love solutions that are so simple a thing . . . :-)

But remember there are no dimensions mentioned in the Media Library. That is the function of the Dimensions line in the Image Widget.
To keep your image within the sidebar on your chosen theme (paperpunch), it can’t be wider than 252 pixels. So that size, or lower, is what should be used.
If you want this image to display correctly, it has to be 200 x 267 pixels. Just tried on my demo blog and it now shows up correctly.

You are most welcome.
And think of all the storage space you’ll be saving by resizing the images first before uploading. :)
