    Hello

I have tried adding the image and gallery widgets at my end but wasn’t able to replicate the issue at my end. I will tag this thread for staff assistance so they can get back to you asap.

    Regards

  • Hi there,

Like @amirudra789, I can’t replicate that either. Can you please take a screenshot of the error you’re seeing and share it here so I can have a look? You can quickly grab a screenshot with https://snipboard.io/

    Related topic:
On September 25, 2021, in the topic Some legacy widget produce an error message and disable the widget area window, I reported that attempts to add certain Legacy Widgets to a widget area produces the error message “The Editor has encountered an unexpected error,” accompanied by a button labeled “Copy Error.”

I listed the widgets that I’d tried that had produced the error, and image and gallery widgets were not among them. I didn’t test all the legacy widgets, but I presume that I tested common ones such as those, and their absence from the list suggest that they worked as expected.

Staff member @aisajib responded to the topic, indicating that it appeared to be a bug. There’s been no update on the topic from staff since 25 September.

@aisajib also suggested a workaround in her response there.

  • @musicdoc1,

Thanks for the cross-link. It appears that issue should be fixed. The problem was that the legacy widget block included widgets that had already been completely retired from WordPress.com.

All retired widgets should have been removed from the drop-down in the Legacy Widgets block now, so this should no longer happen. If you do still spot issues with that block, please comment on your original thread and we can follow up there.

The widgets the OP are trying to add, gallery and image, are not legacy widgets, so not related to that particular issue.

(slaps head) Ahhh, thanks again! I’m a bit rusty after taking a few weeks off. : )

Haven’t we had gallery and image widgets for over ten years? That’s why I presumed they were legacy widgets. Maybe I’m not clear on what a legacy widget is. I thought they were the widgets that were present before the introduction of block widgets.

  • @musicdoc1,

The legacy widgets, that you can add via the Legacy Widget block, are old WordPress widgets that don’t have a block-equivalent. For now it’s still possible to add those, but our developers are systematically working through them and either retiring them or replacing them with blocks, depending on what makes the most sense given the widget’s usage.

When WordPress 5.8 came out, the original image and gallery widgets were removed in favour of the image and gallery blocks, so they’re not listed in the drop-down for the Legacy Widget block. In other words, if the OP is having trouble adding either of those to their widget area, they’re working with the current block versions :)

Got it. Thanks again, chief : )

  • Always a pleasure :)
