widget fails to display

  • Unknown's avatar

I select a number of different widgets (Facebook like, Follow Me, Word Cloud, etc) and place them in my Sidebar, but they never display properly on my main page – or not at all. I’ve even tried changing themes with the same problems. I’ve cleared my cache, but it continues to happen and seems more a failure in the widget itself. I’ve removed all widgets until this is resolved.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Please do not assume that every theme is designed to display sidebar or footer widgets as that’s not the case and has not been the case for some years now.

Some themes are designed to display widgets on the front page and some are not. Some are designed to display only sidebar or only footer widgets. Some display both footer and sidebar widgets. And some have “hidden” slide-out widgets that display only after a link is clicked. Also note that we can use widget visibility settings to determine which pages widgets do display on

    See https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/mixfolio/

Removing the widgets you are having problems with makes it that much harder to try and help you troubleshoot the problem.

Also, the theme you are using, Mixfolio, has proven to be a bit of a “troublemaker” itself in the past. I strongly recommend looking at the demo site in order to see how the widgets display there.

You may consider switching to a different theme that displays in a more straightforward way and better suited to your content.

Let us know if you need more help with any of that.

Fair enough. Per the FAQ, some widgets do not transcribe from one theme to another. I have since changed my theme today, and have one widget loaded per three sidebars and three footer areas, and yet only one out of the six active areas displays. I even tried deleting the widgets and reloading them in different orders and it only changed where the one actively displaying (Gallery) appeared.

    Thoughts?

I clicked through yesterday to your site and at that time your site was using Chateau and I saw widgets in the footer area.

Today your site is using Canard and I see several widgets in the sidebar.

So has this issue been resolved for you with the change of theme?

I confirmed through my work and home office computer, the problem is the ‘Ad Blocker’ program that runs in the background of my Mac’s Safari browser. The widgets were there, but for whatever reason certain ones were mistaken as ads and thus not making it through the program. I’ve since changed the settings and all elements are now present. Thank you for your assistance and patience.

Thanks for that and you’re welcome.

I’ve seen forum threads on ad blockers stopping the twitter timeline widget, but sincerely, this is the first time I’ve heard of a problem with WPcom’s other widgets being blocked.

I’ve tagged this for Staff information and follow up.

  • Hi @milspecia, if you’d like to let us know which widgets were blocked, we’ll look into this. Thanks!

Follow Blog, Follow Button, Facebook Like, both Cloud widgets, Twitter, and a few others. It seems to have coincided with an MacOS update I received around the same time that likely updated my ‘AdBlock’ app as well. I modified the AdBlock security settings to allow .wordpress pop-ups and other features and they are now appearing.

  • Thank you! I’ll pass that information along.
