Hello there,
Those widgets cannot display any data at all unless or until you publish posts so they have data.

https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/calendar-widget/Every theme has a detailed theme description page with set up instructions like this one https://wordpress.com/themes/plane/ and a live demo site like this one https://planedemo.wordpress.com/
re: the front page error message found on every new .wordpress.com blog
There is nothing wrong with your blog.
By default, the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post, not a page, the error message will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

A blog is a website. The difference between blog and website is simply structure and semantics.
A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.
What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one-way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds, and as others do not backlink to pages, it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

Good morning,
I tested this out on my own website and discovered that, if you don’t have any blog posts published, neither the Calendar widget nor the Recent Posts widget will appear (unless you’ve given them a title, in which case, only the title will appear.)
As soon as you post your first blog entry, it should show up.
Have a wonderful day, and happy blogging!

Thank you for all your advices! Very useful! and indeed, now after posting first post widgets are appearing. But I have one more question – when I post a link to my blog there is no icon/ picture appearing on the side. How do I make so that the picture that appears on the top of my blog appears once I share the link to it?
Thanks!! Have a great day all!

Hi there,
Are you posting these links on social media, such as Facebook?Images in Publicize http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/#images-in-publicize
Unfortunately, WordPress.com doesn’t exactly pick which image your social media sites will use. Additionally they don’t always flush their image caches, so they might think that an image doesn’t exist when one does. We only send them the URL, and their technology isn’t as smart as ours here at WordPress is–it hunts for images and frequently doesn’t find ones that clearly exist!
These links will help Facebook, specifically:
Facebook debugger
http://developers.facebook.com/tools/debugHere is a link to the help document for Facebook.
Here are some helpful tips for getting your image to display on social media (from the help document above):
Facebook Publicize typically selects images that are at least 200 x 200 pixels in the following order:
Featured image
The first image of a Slideshow within the post
The first image of a Gallery within the post
An image attached to the post and inserted
Any other image in the post (not attached but perhaps linked)So even though the picture that appear in the top of your blog is clearly there, Facebook is looking, generally, only at images hosted within your blog posts; set a featured image or include images within your blog entries specifically to make is to that Facebook is more likely to find your images! =)
I hope that helps. Happy blogging!
-Sarah
