Widget problem

  Hi, i was using a theme that downloaded from here, but it did not came with widget .
  i created the function.php and added the following

  <?php
  if ( function_exists(‘register_sidebar’) )
  register_sidebar();
  ?>

  when i go to presentation =>widgets=> i see my sidebar1 , i drag and drop the available widget and i save it. but it does not work my sidebar continues being the default one.
  any ideas?
