Widget Request : Subscription via email
-
I’d like to see a widget which enables users (not neccesarily fellow wordpress bloggers) to enter an email address for subscription to a newsletter update of the site – a kind of “what you’ve missed”.
There maybe other uses for collecting email addresses, but that’s essentially my request : a widget to collect an email address, stored on my dashboard, to be used for whatever purpose the administrator requires.

Actually it’s been discussed a few times already. I know that there would be a possibilty of abuse if allowed and then it would also mean adding in a few mail servers which is always fun.
We had suggested back then one of those “Email me if this page updates” services as a method of doing this.
Is a good idea though. I don’t know how Matt and staff would feel about the possibitly of the abuse though.

Abuse is an understandable concern. However, the submitter of the email address takes that risk, not wordpress.com.
What if the widget had two fields : A subscribe and an unsubscribe field. That way, if an email address was added incorrectly, it could be removed.

Perhaps you could support feedblitz or other similar mail service in a widget. Then wordpress wouldn’t have to host the mail servers…
-
That’s what we suggested last time this subject came up. (Well, I suggested a google search due to a conflict of interest on my part.)

have we got anywhere with this? I still see a good number of requests for forms (or some other ability to capture information from a user).
A widget to capture an email address seems sensible as it means that there is no requirement for wordpress to help people building their <forms>
-
I’m pretty sure that staff have read the multiple requests. Perhaps if you feel the request merits quicker attention and you you need an answer right away you could send it to them through feedback.
-
Just because you think that there’s “no requirement” doesn’t mean there isn’t.
Remember, it’s security vs features.

umm actually u can use feedblitz on ur blogs right now. there’s a link on ur setup page to a form which is hosted on thier site to signup to ur feed. thats what i’ve used. http://www.everythingelse.co.nr – scroll down the feed buttons in the sidebar, the last one sayys email signup – check that out.

I’m also looking forward to this feature. In the meantime, I’ve been playing around with Feedburner’s Subscribe by Email tool, which yields an html form which you can ideally paste in your sidebar’s php. Since we only have widgets, I tried using a Text widget, but somehow it truncates the html code.
From this:
<form style=”border:1px solid #ccc;padding:3px;text-align:center;” action=”http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverify” method=”post” target=”popupwindow” onsubmit=”window.open(‘http://www.feedburner.com’, ‘popupwindow’, ‘scrollbars=yes,width=550,height=520’);return true”>Enter your email address:Delivered by FeedBurner</form>
To this:
<form action=”http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverify” method=”post” target=”popupwindow”>Enter your email address:Delivered by FeedBurner</form>
