Widget Visibility in Twenty Fourteen

Anyone have issues with updates to the visibility with widgets in the Twenty Fourteen theme? I want different widgets available in the Primary and Content widget areas depending on page. By default, several standard widgets showed up in both areas. I found that to be overkill on the front page, but I didn’t want to remove all of them . If I changed the visibility of a useful widget in the content area on the right hand side of the page, it would also disappear on the left. I tried this several times, retried it. Tried it in reverse. Same result. Any thoughts? Am I expecting too much?
