Widget Visibility Plugin
-
On my WordPress.com site there is the option to control what widgets appear on what pages using
Appearance -> Widgets in your blog’s Dashboard, edit the desired widget and click the Visibility button.
I do not see this functionality on my self hosted WordPress site and was wondering what plugin they are using on WordPress.com for this functionality so I can install it on my self hosted site as well.
Thanks!
PaulThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

FTP access and plugins are only for VIP bloggers http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ or for those with WordPress.ORG installs.
There is no FTP access to our free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we cannot install plugins. If you must have plugins then you have to hire a web host and set up your own WordPress.org install. Read the comparison here please > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Also note that we provide support only for WordPress.COM blogs here. We don’t provide support for WordPress.ORG software installs. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.org click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.org bloggers.

Appearance -> Widgets in your blog’s Dashboard, edit the desired widget and click the Visibility button.
That applies ONLY to WordPress.ORG installs.
Here at WordPress.com you go here Appearance > Widgets and set up the widgets of your choice.
See the selection and description notes here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/category/widgets-sidebars/
Note that we cannot use iframes of JavaScript widgets on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/ -
Thanks for responding, but I must not have made my post very clear. On my WordPress.com site/blog I can add a widget and then while adding the widget I can select
- visibility
to tell it where I want it to appear (pages, posts, etc.).
However, on my self hosted WordPress site when I add a widget I do not see the
- visibility
option as on WordPress.com and was wondering if this is a plugin that I can install to get this functionality or basically how to add it to my self hosted site?
I will try to post an image shortly that will hopefully clarify better what I am trying to explain in text.

It is not available for your self hosted site at this point in time. It is an in-house WordPress>COM widget only at this time.

Hopefully this will better explain the issue.
Widget with Visibility Option on WordPress.com
This first link is a screen clip from the Widget panel of my WordPress.com blog site which you can see there is an option to set visibility.
Widget with No Visibility Option from Self Hosted WordPress Install
This second link is a screen clip from the Widget panel of my self hosted WordPress blog site which you can see there is no option to set a widget’s visibility.
Just curious how to get this functionality on my own self hosted site.
Thanks!

I comprehend what you are asking. There is no plugin available at this time for WordPress.ORG installs.
-
Hmmm … you would think it would part of the core something that important. I know with all my Joomla sites I can totally manage what module and plugins appear on each site. Seems like it would be a basic, core functionality to make WordPress a true CMS for not only blogs but a website in general.

This is the guinea pig platform. Here whatever innovations are introduced are done so without announcement and after we WordPress.COM guinea pigs have assisted Staff to correct all the glitches then whatever it is become available for use by WordPress.ORG users. I’ll tag this thread and Staff will note your interest in the as yet announced WordPress.COM in-house widget update becoming a WordPress.ORG plugin.

Gotcha!
And thanks again!!!
Having work with Joomla for quite some time, but now moving into WordPress as well it can be quite challenging to switch gears at times.
In our office we used primarily Joomla for the last 5 years, but since one staff member started using WordPress.com we have gradually started incorporating a few self-hosted WordPress sites. When they come to me and ask why I can’t do on the self-hosted site what they can do on their WordPress.com blog I then have to start scrambling for answers.

Here’s the deal. WordPress.com is on continuous roll-out and that means there can be as many as 2 dozen code changes daily. At WordPress.com approximately 1 month before every WordPress version release that version is up and running on WordPress.com and we guinea pigs are torture testing it. A month later it becomes available to WordPress.org users. Not every widget we have at WordPress.com is released as a plugin . My guess is when Staff does respond here they will politely note your request and be unable to provide a date when the plugin will available.

There are a lot of similar plugins that you can find via http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/
Here are just a few:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/widget-manager-light/
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/widget-logic/ -

Thanks! I was looking at some of the various plugins and did see Widget Logic and another called Widget Context but couldn’t tell how easy or difficult they might be to implement and use. Widget Manager Light also looks very promising.
Going to start by installing them on a demo site and see.
Thanks again for the recommendation.
