widget won't display

foodblogs.com widget will not display. I have uploaded to my media library and copied the code into the widget settings. The thumbnail is in my sidebar but will not display as a picture – only a box with a cross in it. Please help.

My about page tab has dissapeared of my front page too – both tabs just say ‘menu item’. Can you help with this too please.

    Thank you,

    Robin.

  • Hi there, I changed the Foodblogs.com image link from a shortcode – which led to an attachment page – to a direct link to the .jpg file:

It now displays correctly in your sidebar. Just let me know if you need anything else!

Thank you very much Kathryn. Could you do the same for the foodgawker widget, or better still tell me how to to it? I had a look at the code, but I’m really not sure what I’m doing!

Can you check the menu item tabs on my front page too please – one of them should be an ‘about’ tab, but it seems to have gone walkabout!

    Kind regards,

    Rob.

  • Sure, let me explain!

I’m going to assume the original FoodGawker shortlink was http://wp.me/a28Mfe-dM – it’s something completely non-functional right now, but I figure you’ve just been experimenting with it. ;-)

If you put http://wp.me/a28Mfe-dM into your browser, you get this attachment page:

    http://tasteandlight.com/?attachment_id=854

The widget doesn’t know what to do with this link, because it’s not an image link, and it can’t cram this whole page into your sidebar. If you right-click the Foodgawker image and choose “View image” (or your browser’s equivalent) you’ll see this: http://tasteandlight.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/bowls2-150×150.png?w=150 – which is a direct link to the image. You’ll want to trim off everything after the extension .png, which leaves you with this URL:

…which is what you want to plug into the image URL text field in oyur widget.

Let me know how it goes, and I’m glad to help you out or explain further if you run into any problems.

I’ll have a look at your menu in the meantime.

  • It looks like you started to create a Custom Menu – but there aren’t any working links in it right now.

    You have two options:

    1) You can head over to Appearance > Menus and finish setting up your menu here:

    https://tasteandlight.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php

The guide I linked to above should help you with the setup.

    2) You can remove the custom menu and let the theme display your default menu, which will display all the pages you’ve published, which at the moment is only your About page. To deactivate your custom menu, just click the Manage Locations tab:

    https://tasteandlight.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php?action=locations

Deselect your current menu by choosing “Select a menu” from the drop-down menu.

Just let me know if you need more help with this.

    Hi Kathryn,

Thanks for your help which I’ve just rated as great – for sorting the widgets for me. You said you would look at my ‘menu’ tabs too – one should say ‘about’ and link to that page. Could you do that please?

    Thank you,
    Robin.

  • Glad you got the widgets sorted out. I added another reply two days ago with two options for your menu – just let me know if you didn’t see it:

If you need help with either route please let me know where you’re getting stuck and I’m glad to assist.
