Have I missed something but is it possible to use a different sidebar on each page or in each parent page?

In most wordpress.com themes, widgets are displayed on all dynamic pages (main posts page, archives, category pages etc.) as well as when you view a static page or a single complete post. There are some exceptions or special cases, though > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/category/widgets/

For my situation I guess this platform in wordpress will not cater for my needs and may have to look at a more standalone website in the future to get the result I am looking for. -
You’re welcome. What you want can be done ion a wordpress.ORG install because you can edit the template. But we cannot edit templates here at wordpress.com as we are all on a multiuser blogging platform and all who use the same theme are, in essence, using the same template.

Just as a matter of interest……when you say ” edit the template” in wordpress.ORG, does that mean editing the template in a simple way or does that involve CSS or something similair to do that.
The reason I ask this is because if we are to have multiple users that are going to provide content and for each individual (who is associated with the team) to be able to post their own content it does become rather tricky because it means spending quite a considerable amount of time bringing each individual up to speed.
And as you would be aware some take forever in showing them how to do this sort of stuff and I am hoping to avoid this. :-) -
What I meant was that on a wordpress.ORG install you may be able to locate a theme with the features you want and install it. If not then you would be required to either hire someone who can code in the features or to code them in yourself.
