  Can I only add the widgets that come with wordpress.com blog? Or can I add other widgets that are not on the default list of widgets?

  You can only use the widgets in your dashboard. Do be sure, though, that you’ve opted to have all the available widgets show in your list of choices.

  You can add code to text widgets, though. But you’re on your own to find the code to do the things you want.
