  • Hi Ryan,

It’s because your theme doesn’t support widgets, so the videos you’ve watched doesn’t apply in this case.

You’re using one of the new block themes, created for the site editor that came out in WordPress 5.9 in January. All aspects of how a block theme looks is controlled using blocks in the site editor under Appearance ->Editor. As such, they also don’t have predefined widget areas, and instead you can create your own widget area, and add widget blocks in that area, according to your needs.

You can find an overview of the site editor here:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/site-editor/

The easiest place to add widget blocks is in the footer section of your templates, though you can also use blocks to create a sidebar on your site if you prefer that:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/add-a-sidebar/

So far we only have one block theme that comes with a sidebar already set up, Stewart:

If you’d prefer a classic theme with a widget area, go to Appearance ->Themes, and select the All Themes tab at the top. Everything from Twenty Twenty and older aren’t block themes, and their settings will more closely resemble the tutorial videos you’ve watched.

Let me know if you have any questions.
