Widgets and changing themes

Is there any way to remove default widgets in themes that have them? I want to change my theme, and was considering Tarski, but there didn’t seem to be any way of removing “Blogroll” from the sidebar.

I seem to remember some discussion of this, but can’t find the right search terms: Tarski (for example) allows widgets, but has defaults. When changing to it, only the defaults show up, but the widgets from the previous theme are still listed as used and so can’t be re-added. Is there any option besides removing them before changing themes and re-adding them afterwards?

  • You can actually remove all default widgets by adding a widget of your own. Once you do this, the sidebar will think that you would like to customize it; as such, it will remove the current contents.

If you have issues while switching between themes, make sure you click “Save Changes” from Design -> Widgets (even if the contents look incorrect). This normally corrects the issue.

And “Blogroll” is actually a LINKS Widget. You can remove it, or rename it, or have multiple ones.

Thank you! That’s not very intuitive, but it did work. I tested that yesterday but switched back to the theme I was using; when I went back to Tarski just now, it remembered my widgets.
