  Wordpress will only give me the option to add widgets to the footer of my site. Why is that the case? and how do get around this?

  Hi @101094444j, it depends on the theme you’re using. If you want a theme with a sidebar widget are on every page, I’d recommend using one of these:
  https://wordpress.com/themes/free/filter/left-sidebar
  or
  https://wordpress.com/themes/free/filter/right-sidebar

  Alternatively, you can use columns in your posts and a reusable block to construct your sidebar. It’s a bit more advanced right now, but also more flexible:
  https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/reusable-block/
