Widgets appear like magic!

LOL… this is a new one I think.

I was on my blog last night so know it wasn’t like that then, but today I’ve noticed that widgets I wasn’t using right now are suddenly appearing on my blog. Does anyone know why this would happen… has WP been doing backend stuff that might’ve caused this to happen, or have I been drinking and don’t know it?

    ;-)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No idea. Stranger things have happened though. Just go to appearance > widgets and remove the ones you don’t want.

  • Unknown's avatar

I was actually just doing that, but you know me… I always want to know why something happened and I figure someone here will have an answer! ;-)

I guess that’s a wake-up call for me to clean house a bit and not have pages and stuff hiding in the blog that I wouldn’t want showing up when something freaky like this happens.

Same thing happened to me. Today the calender widget appeared on my sidebar. I have never used the calender widget. The thing is… I kind of like how it looks and will probably leave it there. But… still wondering how it got there in the first place.

Yes, same here, not a coincidence, WP is doing some type of update.

  • Unknown's avatar

OMG! And it isn’t even the weekend!

  • Unknown's avatar

Arrgggh! Not again…! However, it’s only the ‘saved for later’ widgets that suddenly reappeared again. OK, so I deleted them all, just to make sure they stay off my sidebar. I hate it when this happens, annoying, but not much harm done.

Ditto husdal. Same problem, same solution. All my “saved’ widgets were put back in my sidebar and replaced with a “gravatar” widget – which I don’t recall ever using. Removed that one too.

  • Unknown's avatar

Same thing happened for me, too. Plus I suddenly had a “twitter” widget!! Me: tweet??? not ever likely.

and it is not even the weekend! ≥^,^≤

  • Unknown's avatar

The same thing happened to me but, yeah I came here to mention the gravatar widget. I put it on my other blog, I don’t know how it’s supposed to be useful though.

ew, it doesn’t look pretty, the widget seems to function as sort of an “about” type thing where it shows your picture but text goes under the picture leaving a lot of white space to the right of said picture. Unless you chose the extra large picture, but It seems kind of distracting, at least if you’re using the widget on the widecolumn

  • Unknown's avatar

A lot of people come here asking how to put an “about” widget” into their sidebar and we’ve had to tell them to use a text widget. This makes it easier for people that do not have HTML experience. They choose their username and gravatar image size and they can enter some text that wraps around the image.

I’ll most likely not use it, but I think it’s a nice addition.

  • Unknown's avatar

Of course if they have a funky gravatar and want their actual picture in the widget, then they will still have to do a text widget.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ack! I can’t believe I didn’t mention that gravatar widget!!! Eeek. Do you think some great new thing will come of this?

  • Unknown's avatar

Like questions about how to use a different image without having to change their gravatar? Those kinds of great things?

  • Unknown's avatar

actually, it might help those of us that use the sandbox theme to use this widget rather then modify a text widget, might not have to worry that much about padding or margins or sidebar mis-alignment when having a widecolumn. Plus you can use html code so thats a plus, and you dont actually have to use a photo, which is another plus until they make the text actually wrap around the picture.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m sure there will be questions about how the gravatar image isn’t changing. Then we’d have to ask whether they went to their profile and actually changed their gravatar or whether the e-mail is correct or if they changed the settings in the widget. That will be fun.

    @thesacredpath

Can you use a different image? No, right? I’ve been away at work all day and my whole blog was messed up when I got home.
Sorry, I’m not getting the point of the gravatar widget? Just tell me to study it for a while.
But why did it show up on my sidebar without me doing anything. GACK…

  • Unknown's avatar

No, you cannot use a different image. It will display your gravatar (if you select your username from the pulldown).

Think of it as an about widget that automatically pulls your gravatar image and allows you to choose from several sizes. You can also enter text to go with the image.

If they are still making changes then the widgets may be a little unstable for a while.

    aye.
It’s just frustrating that things change while one is away (and mostly I’ve not been personally affected in the last 2 1/2 years by most bugs people in these forums ask about.)

This gravatar widget is like an enhanced authors’ widget? But it appeared without me adding it (and deleted my authors’ widget) and the formatting is odd. That’s cool. They are working on something new, I’d assume.

Sorry to bother anyone. Yes, “If they are still making changes then the widgets may be a little unstable for a while.”

Change is inevitable and none of us can expect warnings about it, right?
