Widgets Issue
-
When I go to customize my widgets in settings. They give sidebar and footer 1 2 and 3. What’s the difference between the two? I just added all my widgets again since I changed themes. I know I already have inactive widgets but when I tried reactivating them I got confused and it seemed to be creating duplicate widgets
I added all my widgets again in footer 1 but when I preview it on my site two search widgets are there and I can’t seem to get rid of one. The social links icons don’t show up either when I preview site
Also how do you get the icalendar url to display upcoming events. And the URLs for the RSS feed
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there,
Happy to help you with this.
When I go to customize my widgets in settings. They give sidebar and footer 1 2 and 3. What’s the difference between the two?
So these widget areas are places in which you’ll see these widgets. So for example, if a page or post has a sidebar, you’ll see the widgets in this section to the side of the content on the page.
With footer widget areas, you’ll see these at the base of the website.
I know I already have inactive widgets but when I tried reactivating them I got confused and it seemed to be creating duplicate widgets…I added all my widgets again in footer 1 but when I preview it on my site two search widgets are there and I can’t seem to get rid of one. The social links icons don’t show up either when I preview site
So to reactivate these, you would just need to move these into their respective widget areas.
What widgets would you like to activate and where exactly should they reside?
Also how do you get the icalendar url to display upcoming events. And the URLs for the RSS feed
To check are you publishing these events on imanissm.wordpress.com? It sounds like these could categorised as events.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

ok
Yes I want my widgets in the main sidebar at bottom of the site. So how would I move the inactive widgets into the sidebar
I already readded the widgets again manually. So if I wanted to reactivate the inactive widgets do I have to delete the current widgets i readded. I’m confused
Yes how do I get the icalendar url for the RSS widgets
-
Hi there,
Widgets can also be managed in the wp-admin interface, at the direct link here: https://imanissm.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php
On that page you will see the last section is called “Inactive Widgets” and you can click it to see any previous widgets you had… it is quite a long list. You can click on any widget to move it to the Sidebar or any of your Footer widget areas, which will reactivate the widget in that location.
You can see how this is done in the video at this link
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Hi
yes I was able to reactivate my inactive widgets from the video you sent
Just a few other questions
How do I get the url for the rss feeds and for the upcoming events widget
Also for the social media links. There already in my sidebar but it’s not letting me add the url link to my profiles. I tried several times on my phone. And on my tablet too
And lastly if I wanted to change themes with a sidebar will all my widgets still remain. When you change themes do widgets get lost? When will new themes be released. Are there currently any new themes

How do I get the url for the rss feeds and for the upcoming events widget
Just to check, which RSS feed(s) were you wanting to show in your widgets? Typically you’d get the URL for an RSS feed from the site/blog whose RSS feed you’d want to display.
The upcoming events widget typically uses an iCal link, and if you’re wanting to use that widget to display events from your calendar we have a guide to help you do that here:
Upcoming Events is a widget and a shortcode. It allows you to use an iCalendar link to display a list of events on your WordPress.com site. This feature can be used for any kind of event list, but it was created especially with musicians in mind so they can rock the web with a list of tour dates. Rock on! 💡 Themes that support the Site Editor do not use widgets, so you won’t see AppeAlso for the social media links. There already in my sidebar but it’s not letting me add the url link to my profiles. I tried several times on my phone. And on my tablet too
For a social icons block, you’d generally need to tap on the specific icon you’d want to add a link for, and it would open up a small URL box. In there you’d type the address of the relevant social media link; so for example a Twitter link would be
twitter.com/username. It’d look a bit like this:
Are you finding that the URL box doesn’t appear when you try to manage the social icons?
And lastly if I wanted to change themes with a sidebar will all my widgets still remain. When you change themes do widgets get lost? When will new themes be released. Are there currently any new themes
It very much depends on what theme you switch to! There are currently two types of themes – classic themes which have widget areas like your sidebar, and newer themes that are compatible with the new Site Editor. The newer themes don’t have dedicated “widget” areas as such, because they are a lot more flexible/customizable in terms of layout, so you’d have the choice of setting up a sidebar if you want. If you do change to a Site Editor theme, your widgets would therefore not follow through and you’d definitely be looking at setting an equivalent sidebar up separately.
As it is, we regularly release new themes; all of the new themes we release are compatible with the Site Editor; so if you’re looking at those, I definitely suggest thinking of them more as example templates that you can adjust or change out completely as you prefer.

ok
Yes for the rss feeds I usually use CNN New York times and others. How would I get those feeds
and yes for the social media links the box doesn’t appear when I click on it
And yes I like themes with sidebars. Which classic themes have them
-
Hi there!
Yes for the rss feeds I usually use CNN New York times and others. How would I get those feeds
RSS feed from these publications is not what you would use on the Upcoming Events widget. May I know what exactly you are trying to accomplish here so that I can understand the goal and assist you with the steps? Do you want to display events from your calendar (personal or work), or do you want to show the latest news/articles from other sites like CNN and NYT?
and yes for the social media links the box doesn’t appear when I click on it
When you’re on the editing screen, can you try clicking multiple times on the icons? If you click once, it will select the overall Social Icons block. So you will need to click a couple of times so that the icon itself is highlighted and the URL field is shown. Please try that and let us know how it goes.
And yes I like themes with sidebars. Which classic themes have them
We don’t recommend using old themes for sidebars because even the sidebar widgets are being phased out for block widgets. Many of the older themes are retired, and if you choose an old theme now, chances are, it will be retired and stop being compatible with new features.
Instead, I recommend reviewing block themes that have a right sidebar here. (This link will show some classic/older themes as well, but I highly recommend choosing a newer block theme so that you have greater flexibility to customize and edit them.)
Hope that helps!

There’s an RSS feed that’s displays news from all over the world. I usually use CNN New york times etc. How would I get those feeds
Then there’s the upcoming events widget. Which displays events holidays etc. How would I get the link to show holidays and events
for the social links I tried multiple times on my phone and tablet but it still doesn’t appear
What are block themes? I’m still kinda confused with the themes
-
Also for my current nuclear theme when you view live demo it shows the widgets on the side instead of the bottom like I have it. How would I change that if I wanted to

Hi there!
There’s an RSS feed that’s displays news from all over the world. I usually use CNN New york times etc. How would I get those feeds
You’ll need to look for them on their individual websites. For example, I did a quick Google search and found this page that links to different RSS feeds within CNN: https://edition.cnn.com/services/rss/
Once you have the RSS feed you want to add to your site, you can insert the RSS block and paste the feed URL into the block. This page explains more about using the RSS block:
RSS is a term used to describe a machine-readable version of the content of a blog or a website. You can display content from any site’s RSS feed on your website. The RSS BlockDisplaying an RSS FeedBlock ToolbarBlock SettingsRSS ShortcodeCustomizing the RSS ShortcodeExamplesTroubleshooting The RSS Block Add the RSS block to a page by clicking on the + Block Inserter and searching for RSThen there’s the upcoming events widget. Which displays events holidays etc. How would I get the link to show holidays and events
The upcoming Events widget needs a calendar to connect to. It doesn’t have a calendar of its own to show holidays and events. So, if you have a Google Calendar, for instance, you can connect that calendar to the widget. The widget will then display all events you add to your calendar.
for the social links I tried multiple times on my phone and tablet but it still doesn’t appear
That’s odd. Can you share the link to the page/post where you have inserted the social icons block so that we can take a look on our end?
What are block themes? I’m still kinda confused with the themes
Block themes use the new Site Editor to allow you to customize nearly every aspect of the theme. Older classic themes have predefined layouts/areas (like widgets) that you can’t really make many changes to. If you use those themes, you’re limited to how the developers designed them to look. With a block theme that works with Full Site Editor, your possibilities are endless, as you can create your own templates and set up different posts/pages to look in different ways.
If you’re using WordPress.com after a long time, I strongly recommend checking out the free resources here: https://wordpress.com/learn
Our free courses, in particular, will be very helpful for you in becoming familiar with the editor (for both editing posts, pages, and theme templates using the site editor). You can check out the free courses here: https://wordpress.com/learn/courses/
I’d also suggest looking at WordPress.com plans to add more features to your site. In addition to being able to register and use your own custom domain, additional storage space, and a host of other features, you will also have access to priority email and live chat support (support options vary based on the plan you purchase).
We recommend getting started with the yearly WordPress.com Personal plan, which gives you a free domain for the first year, extra storage space, removes WordPress.com ads from your site, and enables email support for you.
Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.

I don’t I have a Google calendar and if so I never use it. But I may have to cuz I wanna display events on my site
For the social links I would send a screenshot but there’s no way to send that through here. But there at the bottom of my site in sidebar
I have a free plan because I don’t wanna pay for the other plans. But I know sometimes it comes with limited features
Also is there a way to backup your site or does wordpress back it up automatically

Hi there,
For the social links I would send a screenshot but there’s no way to send that through here. But there at the bottom of my site in sidebar
You can upload it to your site’s Media Library and we’ll be able to view it.
Also is there a way to backup your site or does wordpress back it up automatically
We automatically back up all of your site’s contents, so you don’t have to worry about that. You can however keep a local backup of your content if you want. Here’s how to do that: https://wordpress.com/support/export/#using-export-as-a-backup-tool

And for the rss feeds I have the cnn link https://edition.cnn.com/services/rss/ but what about the rss feeds for the new York times and other feeds. How would I get those links
And for the upcoming events widget I don’t use Google calendar but I do wanna be able to display events on my site

also I just switched my theme. But when it shows live demo it shows widgets on the side instead of bottom. How can I add widgets on the side like in the demo. I don’t see widgets when I go to customize

And for the rss feeds I have the cnn link https://edition.cnn.com/services/rss/ but what about the rss feeds for the new York times and other feeds. How would I get those links
Usually you’d get those from the websites in question! I used a search engine to look for “New York Times rss” and the results showed me this link:
https://www.nytimes.com/rssFor other feeds that you want, I’d suggest checking the sites first and if they don’t offer any obvious information, searching for “[site name/address] rss” should get you some relevant URLs.
And for the upcoming events widget I don’t use Google calendar but I do wanna be able to display events on my site
What sort of events are you thinking of – would these be set up using an external service of any kind? Are you intending to sell tickets or have attendance sign-ups for the events? If not, then perhaps the ‘Upcoming Events’ block alone would do the trick:
Upcoming Events is a widget and a shortcode. It allows you to use an iCalendar link to display a list of events on your WordPress.com site. This feature can be used for any kind of event list, but it was created especially with musicians in mind so they can rock the web with a list of tour dates. The theme you’re using now, Bitácora, is a Block theme that is compatible with the Site Editor (Appearance > Editor). That means that you’d be using the Site Editor to add items to the sidebar. The Site Editor guide shared by
aisajibcan be helpful for finding your way around it and adding things to the sidebar! -
ok
For the upcoming events widget I wanna display holidays on my site. But I don’t use Google calendar

Also I find the new site editor very confusing to use. I’m trying to add the widgets to my sidebar. I’m trying to follow the guide link you provided above but I’m still confused
