Widgets not appearing in fly-out side panel

  I am using the Espied theme. It has the Gallery Post Format, which I wish to use. It also states it offers a widget area that appears in the fly-out side panel along with menu and social links menu. I wish to use either the Recent Posts widget or the Archives widget. I have a static page as the home page. I do not see the widgets on either the home page or the post page I have created when I preview them. I do see the menu link. How can I display the widgets on this theme?
