Widgets not appearing in sidebar

  Hey, I am new to this and I am having trouble with widgets. I’m using this theme :
  https://wordpress.com/theme/toujours/lovingfromadistancesite.wordpress.com , when I add widgets to my sidebar for some reason they appear in one column under my posts? In the overview of the theme it shows “older posts” on the left and “sidebar” on the right…I tried adding the chat and the recent post widget to the sidebar but it automatically goes under my posts. Someone please help me fix this..thank you in advance to whoever answers!
