widgets not working on other wordpress sites
-
I am taking the blogging101 class. This has introduced me to a bunch of new blogs. While I CAN Like blog posts in the Reader if I am following that particular blog, the widgets on the actual blog sites are not working for me on my desktop. It does not seem to matter if I am logged in or if the widget I click on is the Like button or the Follow button; they just don’t work. I CAN leave a comment if that is allowed, but that seems to be it.
I am using Firefox (updated) and have turned off the pop-up blocker and do not have any add-ons running that should interfere with javascripting or pop-ups. I do have the latest version of Shockwave Flash as an add-on and the latest version of java is installed. My antivirus program is AVG and it recently did an upgrade, but this problem existed before that.
So, is there something I need to do to fix this? It is very annoying to not be able to Like a post or to Follow a blog without going through the Reader to do it — and I know that doing it through the Reader does not show up in the Stats the same as if it is done while visiting the site.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there @timgatewood, a volunteer just brought this thread to our attention. Were you able to sort this out yet?
I’m assuming you’ve already tried clearing your browser cache and restarting Firefox. If you haven’t yet, please try that. And if that doesn’t help, let us know whether you have the same result in another browser. We’ll go from there.
-
Yes, clearing my browser cache (which I have Firefox set to do automatically when I log out) does nothing. I just rechecked to be sure I had it set correctly; I do. Alas, the problem is not sorted out. If I am not logged into WordPress when I click the Like button on a post, it opens the window to do that, but does not add my Like to the post. If I click it again (while logged in), it tries to open the same window but fails to do so. Also, whether I am following the blog does not show. I tried it in Chrome and these are not issues there (in other words, both work correctly in Chrome), so this is some sort of Firefox issue. Do you have any Firefox-working-with-Wordpresss.com experts? I suspect I need someone who is a tech that uses both.
-
Sure. Let us know what version of Firefox you’re using, and the version and name of your operating system as well. We’ll check it out.
-
I am running Windows 7 on an HP desktop. Firefox version 40.0.3, which appears to be the current version (just checked and it says it is up to date).

And, I want to point out that I can and do Like posts from the native browser on my Blackberry and it will show if I am following that blog when I pull it up. Also, I noticed earlier today (last night) that I can Like a comment on my own blog and it did show that I was following my own blog, just not anyone else’s.
When I go to anything else on WordPress after trying to like a post or follow a blog (without success), the box to log in comes up with my user name filled in but not my password. This happens even if I am already logged into WordPress and using it to other things. So, the glitch appears to be in how Firefox is handling the script that tells something that I am logged in.
If the Java Deployment Toolkit is needed for this to work, that is the problem, as Firefox (Mozilla) disabled that & claims it is insecure. Other than that, I don’t see any add-ons that might be affecting scripts.

Can you list a few sites that are giving you trouble, and tell me what action you are trying to take on those sites?
I’m going to try to duplicate this here.

Basically, every WordPress.com site that I go to acts the same way. I don’t expect non-WP blogs to have Like buttons or Follow buttons (and they don’t, even though some of them are set up so that I can follow them in the Reader). I would like the WP blogs to work right. I am sure there is something OFF that needs to be ON or ON that needs to be OFF in my Firefox settings or Add-ons and that is why I asked if you had a Firefox-working-with-WP tech expert. These problems do not show up when I use Chrome, but I prefer Firefox as my default browser, so that’s no help. They also don’t show up when I access the sites from my Blackberry, but I want to be able to use all the features and widgets that are supposed to work when I am on my desktop, too.
Here is one blog post that I tried to Like today: https://artflowsinmyveins.wordpress.com/2015/08/30/qsm-magazine-issue-0-humor-satire-parodies-by-anand-mrs-chaddha-and-wifey/
Here is another one: http://www.theseeds4life.com/there-is-always-room-at-the-top-daniel-webster
Both of those are blogs which I have already Followed, so that widget is not involved with them.

Lots of us use Firefox regularly, actually. I still haven’t been able to duplicate this in Windows or on a Mac, either.
Can I ask whether you have third party cookies disabled? We have a test here:
-
I have third party cookies set to Always Accept. Is there a javascript or JRE involved with these widgets?
-
The reason I ask is that I don’t see anything about javascriping or java in the Add-Ons EXCEPT the Java Deployment Toolkit and it is disabled. If these widgets use java or javascripts, that is likely where the goobered-up factor came in. Neither one of those seem to update automatically; perhaps I downloaded and installed the wrong version of Java or the Java Runtime Environment when I did the last manual update.

Thanks. And I’m not too worried about the development toolkit. You actually shouldn’t need any add-ons to make it work.
In fact, if you would, try starting Firefox in Safemode to see whether that makes a difference. This article explains how.
Also, for my testing, I’m using Firefox default settings (a brand new install for Windows, in fact). I am mainly testing by liking the articles at en.blog.wordpress.com (though I did test one for artflowsinmyveins too). If you’d like to test there, too, to ensure we’re testing the very same thing, that would be great.
Also, I’m clicking the WordPress.com like button.

THANK YOU !!! Safemode fixed the problem. I did not even know Firefox had that! Whatever add-on or extension was goobered-up, it’s fixed now, as I am back to being able to Follow blogs and Like posts! YAY!
-
You bet. You might want to use extensions later, so maybe just uninstall the ones you’ve got and try again. Or I think that article had instructions to completely reset Firefox, too.
Cheers!
