Is it possible to have widgets on both sides of my page? If so, how? Can I use this theme or do I need a different one? Thank you!

You need a different theme, and your options are very limited. See here, under “Two or three sidebars” and “Sidebar(s) plus bottom and/or header”:

The Twenty Ten theme introduction notes are here > http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyten/ Note that this theme has footer areas for widgets.
Three themes immediately come to my mind Andreas 09, Digg 3 Column, Garland. This is the link to the Themes Showcase There you can use the feature filters in the searchbox to locate themes with right and left sidebars.

What if I have pro – can I custom the one I have to have more widget area?
No. Every upgarde is for single blog for a single year and only for specific features. There are no upgrades that will allow you to edit themes or templates on free hotsted WordPress.com blogs.

If you are talking about modifying a theme via CSS, you cannot add functionality with CSS. CSS is simply a styling document used by the browsers to position and style the elements of a web page. It cannot be used to add functionality.
A sidebar on a three-column theme that has two sidebars on one side can be moved with CSS so that there is one on each side, but if the theme does not have two sidebars then you cannot add one.
If the theme has a bottom widgets area most times it can be moved up and placed next to the content, but in most cases this is a serious bit of rework on the theme CSS to get everything to look right and consistent.
