Widgets on static pages?

  • Unknown's avatar

It looks like I can put widgets in my sidebar(s) but not on pages. My little knowledge of the web suggests that pages other than the blog page are static, so I’m puzzled that I can’t put widgets on static pages too. Is there a major techical obstacle to this, or is it just too much work for too little benefit? — Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Some themes do sidplay sidebar widgets of pages and some do not. The choice is usually a Page Template option. Edit the page and look in the far right hand sidebar to locate Templates.

By default, Twenty Ten uses a two-column layout with lots of room for widgets. If you’d like to hide the widgets and focus on the writing for a particular page, just choose the “One column, no sidebar” template. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyten/

Sorry, I did not express myself clearly. Let’s forget about the sidebar. The body of the page can have media in it. Why can’t it have widgets in it?

Which widgets do you want to put on a page?

For some widgets, like the links widget for example (provided you don’t update/change it often), one can copy the source code with the hyperlinks and paste it onto a page

A category widget is also doable (again provided you don’t add or change your categories) can also be copied from source code than pasted onto a page. The links to the category pages update, so if you add posts to a cat they will appear on the page. But if you add a new category, then you’ll have to update the page with the same copy/paste manual procedure.

Thanks! I forgot about editing the HTML. (What a dummy.) The particular widget I was looking at was GoodReads, but there are other problems with that one anyway. WordPress only offers the 3 pre-defined GoodReads shelves, and I need more than that.

So there isn’t some reason why static pages can’t have widgets. We just don’t happen to have a WordPress editor at the moment, to make it easier for the HTML-challenged among us to add widgets to static pages. Thanks again.

Sorry, I did not express myself clearly. Let’s forget about the sidebar. The body of the page can have media in it. Why can’t it have widgets in it? …

WordPress.com does not allow scraper blogs or automated content blogs and the solution is not to provide the ability to use widgets in posts or pages. http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

So there isn’t some reason why static pages can’t have widgets.

Some themes like Twenty Twelve are not coded to display sidebars on single post pages. Also note t custom design upgrade cannot be used to add a sidebar to pages which do not have one already. That would require hacking of the underling PHP script files, which we cannot do on free hosted WordPress.com blog .

    @azscvgs

It wouldn’t make sense to put the stats widget on a page (and because it uses script you cannot).

And rss feeds are prohibited for the reasons timethief mentioned: scraper sites…

As for the GoodReads, I don’t use it. Does it use flash code?

    @ Tess,
See here > GoodReads Widget for the one we can use on WordPress.com blogs.

Yes, but if it is one of those widgets like the Flickr widgets which use flash, then it’s possible to use gigya code to place on a page or in a text widget. Just a wild guess about the possibilities…

not that this applies to the OP, but Panos has this about Flickr and flash:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/07/17/gigya-2-flickr-slideshows/

I think is is doubtful, but not having experience with it, if it is flash based then there might be possibility.
