Widgets that show up even though I don’t have any

I use the Contempt theme and have modified it slightly using CSS. I have deliberatly turned off all widgets so that my blog pages are clean — but — there are several widgets that still show up! The Archives, Categories, Links and Meta. I don’t mind this when viewing in IE6 (have to for work reasons), because they are all down at the bottom of the page, but when anyoune views the blog in Firefox the widgets are up at the top and obscure the content of the blog! The blog is private, so I can’t really let anyone see it to help troubleshoot, but if someone would tell me how, I can provide screenshots.

Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.

I believe that’s one of the quirks with the Contempt theme that it shows the default widgets if none are selected.

Maybe try if a blank text widget fixes it?

All widget-aware themes display a sample set of sidebar items when you haven’t added any widgets. Once you add any widget yourself, that set is cancelled. For a no-widgets sidebar, the usual way is adding a blank text widget, as carocat says. But Contempt creates boxes around text widgets, so if you do that you end up with an empty box; you need to add an empty RSS widget instead.

Ah, I didn’t know that, thank you!
