widgets vanished when migrating to cPanel on GoDaddy. They did the migration
-
I didn’t realize the widgets would disappear and it sounds like neither did GoDaddy. My newly migrated site still contains the widgets from the old hosting plan but I have no way to access them, remove them, or edit them.
The GoDaddy customer service rep yesterday suggested: ‘You should be able to add them (on the new dashboard) and those you are seeing in your live website will be overwritten by the new widgets you will be adding.’ Will this work? He was a bit all over the place in his attempts to help. I had to Google ‘widgets vanishing’ for him to realize it’s a thing. His first answer was to think they screwed up, his second answer was to say my old hosting plan didn’t show widgets so they didn’t screw up because they weren’t there to begin with. (Well they’re there on my site sooooo). The old hosting plan now points to a new URL that has extra digits with the addition of ‘old.’ So I’m thinking that’s why no widgets showed for him, but I’m not certain: Cut and paste from the link I found yesterday: “When you do a basic find and replace for all mentions of a URL in a database and the new URL has a different amount of characters than the one before, this will invalidate the serialized array. Basically, you lose all your widgets that are stored in that array, including individual widgets that didn’t have a URL (or any text for that matter) replaced with a new one with a different amount of characters.”
If his suggested fix of simply entering new widgets is the answer, I’m thinking I need to do the widgets in the order they appear on my site so the first one I enter will override the first one showing. I am very technologically challenged so this unnerves me. I could add them in the past, but never did the FaceBook one or the Twitter one, for example, so it makes me nervous I’ll mess up what appears to work for now. Do you think this is my only option for fixing my widget accessibility on the newly migrated site? Is there a better way? Should I be hiring someone? Thanks! -
Hi,
It appears that your website uses the self-hosted version of WordPress rather than WordPress.com, which is what this forum is designed to help with. Note the difference here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
You may be able to find help here: https://wordpress.org/support/ or alternatively contact your hosting provider.
Hope this gets fixed soon!
