Widgets visibility

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I’m new here so patience appreciated. So far my site only has static pages with no widgets. I want to add a blog/post page with widgets. I set up the widgets I wanted, but when I click on the ‘Visibility’ button absolutely nothing happens. No ‘if’ choices…zip! The lack of ‘try before I buy’ is annoying because when I set up the widgets they were live on all my static pages…where they’re unwanted. I can’t try again as whatever I set will be live immediately on the unwanted pages. I’m using the free Hemingway Rewritten theme.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Th is the link to your detailed theme description page with set up instructions https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/hemingway-rewritten/

Widgets have visibility settings that determine which pages they display on https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibility

Thank you so much timethief. I think I’ve done most of what you suggested…sadly, with no luck.
    1. Confirmed my browser version conforms with Browse Happy.
    2. N/A
    3. (a) Cleared browser history
    (b) Ensured cookies & JavaScript enabled
    (c) Disabled all extensions and add-ons
    (d) Couldn’t discover how to add WordPress as a trusted site in Safari (or Firefox)
    4. Downloaded and installed the latest Flash version – 18.0.-1 – & closed & restarted browser
    5. Tried using Firefox, after repeating above steps
    6. I don’t know how to let staff know…unless via this post? If so
    (a) Not sure what you mean by device? I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), connected via wifi with Apple Airport Extreme, through Telstra technicolor Gateway modem.
    (b) Safari Version 8.0 (10600.1.25) & Firefox 39.0
    (c) Nothing happens when the widget ‘Visibility’ button is pressed. Except, if the paged is scrolled down when the Visibility button is pressed, the page jumps to the top. If no scrolling, nothing happens.

I hope I’ve been clear with my descriptions. And again, thank you very much for the time you’ve taken to help.

    Hi there,

There are a couple different places where you can make changes to your widgets and their visibility:

    1. The “Widgets” section in your site’s Customizer
    2. Under Appearance > Widgets in your site’s WP Admin dashboard

Do you have trouble with the Visibility button in both places, or just one of the two? Also, do you run into trouble no matter what widget you add?

That will help me track down the issue for you. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you rachelmcr. I didn’t know about Customizer. And it worked via this option. I tried Appearance>Widgets again, and it continues not to work there.

I was trying 3 widgets – Search, Categories & Archives. The same thing happened with all 3 via Appearance>Widgets. And did again just now.

However, all worked fine via Customizer. So I guess I’ll go that way…although I do prefer the WP Admin window.

All tonight’s tries have been through Safari…I hate Firefox :-)

    Really appreciate your help.

Thanks for those details! I’m glad the Customizer is working for you.

I checked in the latest versions of Safari and Firefox and both approaches are working for me. Can you check to make sure you’ve updated to the latest version of Safari?

I’d also recommend clearing your browser’s cache, and checking any extensions installed in Safari, to make sure nothing is blocking that Visibility button from working.

If you’ve done that and still run into trouble with it in WP Admin, or if you have questions about any of those steps, please let me know!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks again rachelmcr, particularly for your lightening fast responses!

I had checked that I had the latest Safari version – Version 8.0 (10600.1.25)…and the sites where I checked said I did. But, on updating OS X I’ve found I now have Version 8.0.7 (10600.7.12)…so I actually didn’t have the latest update. I’ve checked again, and the visibility button is now working through the WP Admin window. As usual, a user generated problem and I’m embarrassed!

Thank you so much for your time and effort, and to timethief. Your help is very much appreciated.

You’re welcome! I’m so glad that update did the trick for you. :) Sometimes having a slightly older version isn’t really the issue, but the process of updating to the very latest and refreshing everything can sort out little glitches here and there.
