widgets won’t activate on public page

  I have just moved ot wordpress where I am hosting two blogs. On dancedoc I use theme Ocean Mist. I go to appearance > widgets and have dragged widgets to the sidebar and saved them according to directions. But they don’t show up on my front page. I searched thru forums for 2 hours and found no advice. I’m a real novice at this, so be kind.
