Changing theme will not affect your current content, it will only change the appearance of your site. You can preview a theme before you activate it, using the ‘Try and Customize’ option on the Theme page:

Both Free and Premium themes have layout options — the amount of flexibility depends on which theme you choose. If you want a wider site that fills more of your browser, have a look at these full width themes:

There is nothing you can do that cannot be undone. Perhaps simply stating exactly what width you are after is the way to go because each theme is unique and the width is defined in the theme itself.

You can choose a new theme at any time. After switching themes, you may need to set up the widgets and menus again — but posts, pages and media will stay with you.
