wierd quantity of adsense ads from wordpress.com
-
I just moved over to looking at my blogs from a different browser (Opera) at which I was not logged on to wordpress.com.
Every page I look at has an advert on it. What’s more they are massive, in the post content column, looking more prominent than the post. (I’m sure I remember some old support info that showed them in a sidebar.)
Is this a new ad policy or is it a glitch?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Depending on the environment in which you are viewing WordPress.com blogs, the ads may be displayed differently. Frequency and placement of ads depend on multiple variables.

@artprop I’m not sure which blogs you are referring to, but as Naoko said, it depends on a number of variables. The ones I know are whether your visitors are logged into WP.com or not, where your visitors arrive from, like a search on Google, whether they land on a single Post as a result of that search and what browser they are using. If they arrive on your blog on a Post with an ad, any other Post they visit after that should be free of ads.
Since I mostly use Firefox, I get very few if any ads at all and even using IE8 from a search on Google on my most popular Post on my photography blog I didn’t get any ads, which rather surprised me (yes, I was logged out and cleared out my cookies beforehand, but didn’t restart my computer).
All in all, as previously suggested, if you don’t want WordPress.com to run a single ad on your blog for a year, you have the option of purchasing the no-ads upgrade. Alternatively, if your blog is really popular (25,000+ pageviews/month) you also have the option of signing up for a revenue sharing program. http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/

Thanks for the info,
I had started up Opera, was opening new tabs and typing in the urls of blogs in the location bars and then clicking on links to go to other pages. At the time of my post, every page I saw had an ad on it.
Since then things have settled down and I get few ads. I tested Opera by deleting all cookies. Now this is the only page I can see ads on (and I always see ads on it):
http://oldcleeve.wordpress.com/2010/05/10/hot-water-from-the-shower/I am trying to understand the algorithm that would create that behaviour. Would other users who are looking at my blogs for the first time with e.g. I.E. also get that blanket coverage of ads? Or was it just an error in the first place?
If the frequency of ads I am now getting is typical, then I can relax.
By the way, you say
We try hard to make the ads discreet and effective and only run them in limited places.
Discreet they are not. I got a large garish image ad twice the size of the VideoPress ad at the bottom of this page in the middle of a blog about art. It actually upset me.
