Wierdly high number of hits on single post in couple of hours. Problem?

  • Unknown's avatar

All of a sudden today one of my older posts started getting a crazy number of hits… no comments or spam or anything… just an insanely ridiculous number of views. More than my entire blog usually gets in two days…

Is this a problem that should concern me? Will editing the post to “private” temporarily, say for a day or so, end this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No harm in getting “crazy number of hits”.

Maybe the post/page title contains popular keywords.

    Nothing to worry about.

Happens from time to time – maybe some of them will stick around – your blog is safe – once in a while one of my 2 year old Posts get hit for 50 or 60 page views in a few hours – someone stumbled onto the Post and shared it with 300 of their best buddies – sometimes a link will be posted in a help forum or someplace –

It’s a movie review for an obscure Singapore horror film. Checking my stats tells me I’m getting tons of single visit/single view hits on that post alone from almost as many different search engine queries for that very film not random keywords.

We’re talking literally 300 hits in under an hour. I don’t see that much traffic in 48 hours normally… for the entire blog. Is that much traffic not suspicious?

why moan about it,i think a lot want a lot of traffic to there blog or post,i know i would anyway

That’s suspicious and I tagged this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

    All subscribed.

Ah… and as a precaution, I did edit the post to “private” which seems to have put the brakes on things. That makes that post invisible and unavailable to people right?

is getting more hits not a good thing lol :)

    hi there,
No, it’s not necessarily a good thing. More to the point, please note that we don’t post into support forum threads like this one unless we have the correct answers to the questions being posed in therm. These are not chat forums. They are strictly for technical support issues only.

I don’t think it’s a problem. Hackers can’t get into your blog just by looking at it, thanks to the security measures at WP.com. It sounds to me like there might be talk of a remake or something, and thus posts about the old version are suddenly being searched. I think making it Private is completely unnecessary.

While this is unusual, it’s not a sign of a problem. I took a look and didn’t see anything that stood out as suspicious. It’s possible someone is doing a project and there’s certain keywords or images in your post that are boosting your traffic. As raincoaster suggests, making the post private isn’t really going to help anything.

I appreciate the peek at things… and it’s nice to know it isn’t a security threat.

Putting that post to “private” halted the activity immediately, and I haven’t had any sort of other strange or unusual stuff since, so I’ll probably leave it that way a few days before making it “public” again just to keep my paranoid lil’ mind happy.

I did do some searches on my own to try to figure it out, and there hasn’t really been any new interest in that old film… no new DVD releases… no talk of a remake or sequel… so I’m at a loss as to why it was singled out.
