Will a visitor know their IP has been blacklisted?
-
I have one particular visitor to my site who seems obsessed with posting links to one particular porn site on my blog.
I have asked him several times to refrain from doing this – especially as a lot of children visit my page. I am now bored of asking, and as he appears to have a static IP address I have added this to the blacklist in my ‘Discussion’ settings.
What I was wondering was how this will appear at his end next time he tries to post a comment. Will it say that his comment is awaiting moderation, will it actually say that his IP has been blacklisted or will his comment just not post at all?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

First off I would suggest also listing his email address, his username (names if more than one) and website if he puts one in to the website field. IP addresses can typically be reset if he resets his modem (DSL or cable). List all the things on separate lines.
Another suggestion is to turn on comment moderation by going to settings > discussion and under “Before a comment appears” select “An administrator must always approve the comment” and then click “save changes at the bottom of the page. That way they comment will not appear on your blog because you will be able to catch it and not approve it. With that type of comment, I would also suggest letting a couple of them come through (with comment moderation turned on) and then marking them as spam and then the spam filter will learn and start blocking that person from all blogs.
I am not sure, but I think the comment simply will not appear when you have them blacklisted. It just disappears into the void. I think all he will see is the comment disappear. I’m not totally sure about that though.

theimpossibleprincess, the “Comment Moderation” word list (the big text box above the Comment Blacklist) is probably what you’re looking for. Any comments containing words in that box will be moderated, rather than blocked outright, and the person who posted it will see a message that says “your comment is awaiting moderation” or similar.
As tsp suggests, include his usernames, email address and IP address in the word list also.

Thanks for your suggestions thesacredpath
I’m not very up on broadband, and wasn’t aware that it was so easy to reset an IP address, so I’ll be listing the other details you suggested.
The one thing I’m really trying to avoid is having to turn comment moderation back on. I have built up quite a good readership on my blog, and have found that a lot more people have been leaving comments since I turned moderation off.
Allowing comments to appear in real time seems to stimulate discussion between regular visitors. It would be a shame to jeopardise this because of one sad individual, however because of the amount of children that visit my page I feel I have a duty to try and make it a safe environment for them.
Thanks again for your suggestions, hopefully they will save me from having to resort to moderation.

Thanks tellyworth
I wasn’t ignoring your suggestions, it appeared in the time it took me to add my first reply – I’m not very quick at typing!
I notice that you are a Staff Member, and was wondering if you could answer me a question on a totally unrelated matter.
What email address do I send feedback to? I was reading a post in the Support section about paid upgrades you were considering adding and you asked for feedback, however I couldn’t work out where to send it.

The best way to send feedback is with the support contact form: http://support.wordpress.com/contact/

By putting the commenter’s information into the Comment Moderation queue, they see the “comment awaiting moderation” message, so they KNOW you have moderated them. (And if they are nasty, they will use your contact me link to send you messages. Been there, done that.) If, on the other hand, you put them into your Comment Blacklist, they will go straight to spam.

vivianpaige, they’ll know something is up if they’re blacklisted because their comment won’t appear. At least if they go to moderation they might assume that all comments are moderated.

Well, I’m just sharing my experience. In three years, I’ve only had to ban 4 people. Unfortunately, two in the last month, including one today. Sending them directly to spam, they have no idea what happened to the post. They complain like heck when they see their comment awaiting moderation and see other comments since theirs posted.
