Will all my links be broken if I remove domain mapping?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been reading this thread: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/what-happens-if-i-change-the-domain-i-am-mapping? and just want to check if it applies to my situation.

My blog http://miycollection.co.uk currently has domain mapping. I want to set up a Shopify shop using this domain. If I remove the domain mapping on http://miycollection.wordpress.com will I loose all the links that I currently have between posts and pages on the blog as they all use the url miycollection.co.uk?

If so, is there something I can do to maintain them all, short of manually going through and updating them all myself (the thought of which fills me with dread…… :o( )?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Oops correction:

If I remove the domain mapping on

      and revert back to

http://miycollection.wordpress.com will I loose all the links that I currently have between posts and pages on the blog as they all use the url miycollection.co.uk?

Yes. They will be. What I said here is correct https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/what-happens-if-i-change-the-domain-i-am-mapping?replies=5 and was corroborated by Staff there as well.

Is there any programme that can convert these links or will I have to trawl through and update them all manually? I’m feeling a bit sick at the thought of having to do this… :o(

There is no program I am aware of that we can run on any WordPress.com blog for this purpose. We have no FTP access and cannot run the required plugin.

I have two mature blogs on domains
    1 onecoolsitebloggingtips.com 5 years 0 months old
    2 thistimethisspace.com 7 years 7 months old
and both have a considerable number of posts (1,029 Posts and 746 posts) as well as many internal and external links. When I choose to have the domain mapping upgrade removed soon I will be faced with the same reality you are facing. In fact, I regret making domain name and domain mapping purchases for them and will not ever do so again for any WordPress.COM hosted blog.

Thanks for your help timethief and let’s hope someone comes up with a genius idea soon…… in the meantime….. oh no :o(

There are plugins for WordPress.ORG installs and we may be told to request that they be included in the Idea Forum. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/ideas However, I have been here for over 8 years and I can witness exactly how many of those requests are ever implemented.

From a programming standpoint – some sort of script running in your browser should do it as the replacement is straightforward – but a niche market

the site could be exported and the search and replace done in a text editor then uploaded again – but I think the content would need to be cleared for the import to overwrite the existing Posts and Pages

My main domain is mapped, and I will keep it as long as I am able to remember to pay the bills

I have two lesser sites, one on history that was not mapped just for this reason

good luck – some of the staff are smart folks – maybe the staff will put this out to the company as a nice thing to do and some nice person will whip it out in a few days or over the weekend

    Hi there,

I’m just popping in to say that you are correct, if you unmap your domain your links will indeed revert back to your basic wordpress address. This is a necessary part of the process because if your domain isn’t pointed at WordPress.com then the links by nature wouldn’t work. If your domain is pointing towards Shopify you can’t have links using your domain to link within WordPress.com!

Let me know if you have any questions.
