Will be moving website to WordPress, but have questions regarding how I can move the content to the new website before it goes live?
-
I was hoping to change the colors of the Menu to brown.
That would require some custom CSS so we would be able to help you with that after you’ve upgraded to at least Premium.
Some older themes will allow you to change colors directly from the customizer but again, there are more options in the paid plans.
If you’d like to, you can try the older themes without activating them by clicking on the three dots next to the theme’s name and choosing the option Try&Customize.
This will allow you to see how the theme would look like with your content and how could you customize it.

Fresatomica,
Thanks for the advice regarding the menu. To be honest, I’m really not interested in upgrading to a paid plan. (Remember I’m working on this website for a charitable organization and we’re watching our costs very closely.) In regards to your suggestion, how do I know which are the “older themes”? Also, if I DO switch themes (from the current theme I’m using – which I just randomly selected as I know nothing about how to go about choosing the correct theme for the website I’m working on), how will that affect the existing layout (with all the customized blocks and all)? Thanks in advance. -
(A cleaner version of my last post.)

I found the free themes page. Since these themes are free, can I logically assume that most of them will allow me to “change colors directly from the customizer”? Thanks again.

Hi @scarbontario, if you’re using the free plan with any theme, you’ll currently have limited color options. Do know though that many older free themes will let you choose a preset color palette for free.

Hi Supernovia,
Thanks again. I’ve been experimenting with several of the free (ie: older) themes the last few hours. With one theme I accidentally lost what I had entered on my Home Page, but it was good practice for me to re-enter it all over again. ;-) -
Supernovia or Fresatomica,
This afternoon I as able to (finally) effect the Transfer Request from my old hosting site to BlueHost. Also re-directed the domain name. As I understand things now, the site will be re-directed in 24-48 hours and the whole process will be done in 7-10 days. A quick question: Is NOW the time for me to “activate” the site that I’ve been working on? Will the re-direct be affected by my activating it? Not sure if I’m following protocol here. Please advise. Thanks in advance for any/all help. -

That shouldn’t affect it, but the folks at Bluehost would know better than we do: https://www.bluehost.com/contact

Supermovia/Kokkieh,
I just spent well over 1-1/2 hours on the phone with someone at BlueHost (or is it BlueSky?) asking them how to migrate an existing WordPress website. Why? Because I just found out that even though I created my entire website using WordPress that I did it incorrectly – and needed to create it with Blue Host (or something like that). To make a long story even longer, I had no idea how to do the migrating, even while using this link—-> https://my.bluehost.com/hosting/help/wp_migrate. Originally I tried the migrating, saving everything on an XML file. That didn’t work. But then (luckily) I realized that I COULD save it via a ZIP file. Yes, that worked, but now I don’t know how to:
– Change themes, and
– Make the website live.
This is all very confusing for me. I had to create the website using WordPress (since it IS a WordPress website), but I was told I had to create it using BlueHost. So…I am back to zero. Yes, I WAS able to migrate all the pages, but, like I said, I’m not able to change the theme (back to Maywood) and/or make the website live. Any/all help would be greatly appreciated. I’m VERY frustrated at this point. Thanks in advance for any/all help on your part. -
And,yes, I DID contact BlueHost. They said they would try to migrate it themselves, but they weren’t able to. They sent me an email telling me they couldn’t – and said that I could call them back to have them help me with the migrating process. In the end, all they could do was say that I would need to “upgrade” ($149/month fee) to have someone migrate the site for me to http://teresiancarmelitecentrecanada.com/. I told them I am volunteering my time working on the website for a charitable organization. Frustrating? Yes.

You can create the site here, no Bluehost required.
We’re WordPress.com, but if you make a site on Bluehost, you’d instead be using to software from WordPress.org.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities, and you can see a breakdown of the differences here: https://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
But, the site you’re references is currently hosted on Bluehost, and using the WordPress.org software, so it’s not something we can help you with due to that being an entirely separate entity.
I would recommend moving the site over to us at WordPress.com, there’s a lot less for you to worry about managing, but please again do look over that comparison I linked to so that you can be sure we fit your needs.
If you do choose to move to us, please follow the guide at https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/
If you want to stay with Bluehost, WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Macmanx,
Thanks for your reply – as well as the links. The big $25,000 question is this: How much will it cost me to move to WordPress.com? -
Looking back in perspective, the reason I went with Blue Host was because of this promotion: https://www.bluehost.com/special/wpbeginner?utm_source=%28direct%29&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=affiliate-link_mbalkhi_Blogger. I didn’t realize it would be so complicated. I really didn’t.

WordPress.com is very user friendly, with support and much jargon-free documentation and video help. You can have a free site or if you need a custom domain a Personal plan is £36 for a year or £60 for 2 years. BlueHost appears to lock you in for 3 years?

Themagicrobot,
BlueHost originally DID lock me in for 3 years, but I called them back and said I only wanted one year at at time – which is what I have now. -
Looking back through your long thread I see you already have the (free?) site https://teresiancarmelitecentrecanada.wordpress.com/ as well as the completely empty BlueHost site teresiancarmelitecentrecanada.com/
What exactly are your plans for the two sites at two different places? Didn’t you consider upgrading your WordPress.com site? -
Themagicrobot,
That was the issue I had to deal with when I was on the phone with the gentleman at BlueHost. He was asking me if I wanted two domains. I said no – I just wanted the http://teresiancarmelitecentrecanada.com/ domain that I signed up for with BlueHost. The problem came when I went to make my domain/site “live”. I accidentally clicked on the “free webiste” .wordpress.com instead of my http://teresiancarmelitecentrecanada.com/ domain. I suppose that was the genesis of all these problems. -
BlueHost and WordPress.com are two completely different places. Each use different versions of the wordpress software. You’re currently logged in to WordPress.com but if BlueHost is where you’ve paid your money and where you plan to develop your site then this forum can’t help you. You’ll need to register an account at the (vastly more complicated)
