If you provide the option for uploading the custom theme & plugin for the wordpress.com (free version), We can attract more people towards the WordPress.com. Also it will help existing users to stay with the WordPress.

Currently this option is provided by the Blogger.

I know there will be some pros and cons. So requested you to please re think about this option.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That option is available with a WordPress.ORG blog.

Because of the way our blogs are structured, it would be unsafe to enable it here. Our blogs share their inner workings with all other blogs on the same theme. If we enabled plugin and theme uploading, we’d be exposing all our users to the worst security risk deemed acceptable by the stupidest blogger. That’s too great a risk.

Thanks for the quick reply raincoaster….

I am totally agree with what you say. But the having some more doubts as below.

    • The risk which you are saying is related to only the user who is uploaded the theme & plugin…?
    • If the the risk pertaining to the user then its their own choice. There is not fault of the WordPress.
    • Also its can be possible to verify the theme & plugin before the uploading. If its match to the criteria then it will be upload. Otherwise it will fail. this will reduce the risk.
    • Also the plugins download option freely available on the WordPress.org site. Which will be at-least secure. Please have look of the link http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/feedweb/

    1) no, the risk is shared across the WP.com platform. If they created an area where anyone could upload their own themes and plugins, the risk would be shared by everyone in that area, ie EVERYONE uploading their own theme or plugin.
    2) see above.
    3) sure, do you have any idea how much that would cost? How much are you willing to pay for that?
    4) WordPress.org does not assume any liability for the plugins or themes. There are hundreds of cases of themes with malware in them. The fact that they have been made and indexed is no guarantee of safety whatsoever.

    3) The VIP program allows plug-ins – but they must be approved by the staff – $ 5,000 per plug-in for review and approval if my memory is correct. OH – and the VIP hosting STARTS at $ 20,000 per year and you need a WordPress Guru on your staff.

WordPress.COM might not be perfect and I have had my complaints from time to time – but there is something to be said for reliability of 31,000,000 blogs and I don’t need to worry much and when a problem is found it is easy for WordPress.COM to roll out changes to all the blogs at once – much simpler – – I found a bug in the stats today with the counting of Posts in review mode – a fix was codded and all the blogs here were fixed within a few hours
