Will ‘categories’ help my blog get found?
-
Hi,
I have a WordPress blog – on my own domain.
If I assign categories to my posts – will this help people find my blog?
And if so how? How does it work?
And who? Just WordPress bloggers? Or everyone on the internet?
Thanks,
– Greg

You need to be over at WordPress.org, not here at WordPress.com, as we’re running very different software and they’ll be able to help you with specifics we can’t.
The short answer to your question is YES, BIGTIME! and “everyone on the Internet”.

Actually rain, the answer on a self hosted blog is “no”. The categories are really only there for organisational purposes within the blog.
What will help is things like technorati tagging, good SEO (which I am not going to discuss ‘cos I know damn all about it), commenting (decent comments!) on other blogs leaving your url, and of course decent and regular content!

It’s interesting that here at wordpress.com our categories/tags do provide a means of “blog location” (promotion) within the wpcom blogging community and that by becoming self-hosted we lose this advantage. Also I do not sense the same “sense of community” over there that we have over here.

There’s very little community over there at all. It’s because so many people just pop in, ask their question and then disappear again when it gets answered. People here tend to be the ones that so geeky (generally) and want more help. They come back to the forum more regularly and build up some rapport with the other bloggers. Take me as an example. I ran my blog here as well as my hosted blog for a few months. I still run my hosted blog but gave up on my .com blogs because of lack of time. Yet I regularly come back to the forum because of the friends that I have made through the .com forum and blogging network.
Building relations in the “big bad blogosphere” is something that’s very hard to do. Sites like Technorati help in a way and do the job that the tag system here at .com does. Doesn’t help the OP though. :(

Cornell, I disagree also. I see most of my incoming links from search engines coming in to the category pages of my blogs. I think categories is a plus for SEO purposes and the extras (ie the tag system, etc.) we have here at wp.com just improve it even more.

TT, right now I would rather be spending my time helping folks and trying to get my own WPMu installs up to date. Heck, I’m still on 2.0.4 on my own blogs. :(

Nah, just still playing catch up.
Must be nice to like go off to all those conferences like someone around here does. Wish I had that kind of time.

*lol* We’re all a wee bit “touchy” these days aren’t we? On the other hand, we could be over there at .org where bloggers with long pointy claws and adsense money madness seem to be the standard.
