Will changing a previously published post preserve its original publish date?
-
I’m considering turning a previously published post private. My understanding is that only I will then be able to read it.
1. If I turn the post private, will it be deleted or become invisible in the archive?
2. If I again publish it, will it retain its original published date and original lineup in the archive or be considered a new post dated as of the time of its being “republished?”
Thanks for any help.

as i understand from reading previous threads in the past, setting your post to private means that it is only visible to readers who are logged in to wp.com. i’m not entirely sure about this though. if you really want to make it totally private, it’s best to password protect it. if you password protect it, it will be visible in archives, but only in title. the post will not be displayed unless you enter the correct password.
if you republish, it will publish according to the timestamp you have set in the editor. if you did not fiddle with the timestamp, it will publish on its original date. it will only be published as new if you edit the timestamp. it should not be recorded under your latest posts, to my knowledge.

Making an already-published post private is probably not going to put off any but the most simpleminded of investigators: ALL of the search engines will already have the post, in full.

Agreed, but it will thwart a scraper using the post from the feed who refuses to remove it and who tells the blogger that’s the internet, delete your blog if you don’t like it.
Or words to that effect…

Yes, but it won’t stop him from scraping someone else. Reporting him to Google Adsense will.
