Will domain mapping allow both my redirected URL page titles to show?
-
Hi
I’ve read the information on Domain Mapping but still have questions:
1] Is WP.com domain mapping simply a redirect, same as I currently use via my domain registrar GoDaddy? If no, what is different about WP.com domain mapping?
2] If I use WP.com domain mapping will the full URL + page titles show up in the browser address bar, or will only my basic URL be seen?
To explain [2] and my problem:
My current redirect takes people from my GoDaddy domain – http://ecohappiness.com – to my WP.com domain: htttp://divinehappiness.wordpress.com So all is well so far…
The problem arises because either:
a] A visitor will only see htttp://ecohappiness.com in their browser address bar regardless of what page they are on – thus disabling their ability to bookmark individual pages, or
b] They see http://ecohappiness.com as the home page but all subsequent pages show in their browser as http://divinehappiness.wordpress.com/pagetitle – thus causing some confusion as to what site they are on.
What I want:
Is to be able to redirect visitors in such a way that no matter what page they are on, what they see in their browser address bar is http://ecohappiness.com/pagetitle
At this point everyone will be happy!
* So, please could you let me know if the WP.com domain mapping function will do this for me?
If not, do you have another suggestion as to how this could be achieved?
many thanks

If you opt to map your domain on WordPress.com, and subsequently choose to make it your “primary domain” for you site, then your users will not see divinehappiness.wordpress.com in their browser location bar, but ecohappiness.com instead.
Primary domain setup: http://support.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/dm-set-primary.png
(taken from http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/)Furthermore, this will indeed work with any of your URLs. For example, http://divinehappiness.wordpress.com/2011/12/05/the-unscented-garden/ would become: http://ecohappiness.com/2011/12/05/the-unscented-garden/. Note that both addresses will still work, but your readers will be redirected to the one you chose (under ecohappiness.com in your case).
The only context in which someone would still see divinehappiness.wordpress.com in their browser location bar is when you go to your site’s administration area (ie: not your readers), which will still be under https://divinehappiness.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ so we can give you a secure site (https) for free. :)

Hi Steph
Many thanks for your prompt reply.
WordPress domain mapping resolved all the problems that GoDaddy domain redirect left me with.
To anyone else who happens along to read this thread I would like to say that WP staff were great, the domain mapping system is easypeasy to set up – and works like a dream.
As a newbie to WordPress.com I’m highly delighted and look forward to a long and happy association.
with kindness,
