Will domain redirect maintain my email?
-
I am setting up a self hosted website and I want to maintain my existing wordpress.com email for a while until I can circulate my new email address.
If I redirect my worpress.com site will my existing email be affected or even stopped?
Many thanksThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you change the name server records of your domain so it points to a different host, the e-mail redirect will get lost.
You can point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), with these steps:
You’ll need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)
I hope this helps – let me know if you have any more questions!

Kardotim is correct,
However, if you want to, i believe it is possible to choose where your website redirects to and where your email redirects to separately.
Just to make sure i have this right:
You have a website alexreis-sciencewriter.com and you want to move that to a self hosted site, but you want to leave your emails on your wordpress.com hosting account.
This is possible by following these instructions: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/
I’m new on the WordPress.com scene so there may restrictions on applying DNS records that im not aware of. but if you follow the instructions above it should do what u want to do.
FYI: routing website traffic and emails to different servers or hosting accounts is possible because the relevant data is routed using DNS record types, an A record type stores the address for web addresses, and an MX record type stores the address for email server, and they can be hosted with completely different companys.
checkout this wiki for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_DNS_record_types

I’m really sorry,
I realised I made a mistake. After re-reading my post and yours, and looking over the WordPress.com documentation, It has become clear to me that WordPress does not offer the option to redirect your mail using DNS records.
Kardotim, obviously he knows what hes talking about cause he is the ‘Happiness Engineer’ sorry to have interfered unnecessarily here.

Rrr,
Sorry i meant that in reverse, you can redirect your email away from WordPress, but you cannot redirect your website and leave your email with WordPress.com.
sorry bout that :P
