will I lose my domain?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I started my blog with blue host as a self hosted blog, then switched over to a free wordpress hosted blog. About midway I upgraded the free account to a premium account, wheras I received the free domain address .com with the upgrade. My question is…my bluehost account expires soon, and I want to make sure I don’t loose the .com address that I now have with wordpress if they delete that domain and put it on hold. How can I be sure nothing bad happens when that bh account expires for good.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    HI!

It looks like you’re referring to the domain keevansoul.com. Is that correct? That domain is currently mapped to WordPress.com, meaning you can think of us as your host (where your information is stored). However, the domain is registered elsewhere (looks like Fast Domains).

In order for the domain to work correctly, you will need to maintain the registration and the Premium bundle/mapping upgrade at WordPress.com.

Provided the registration is not at Bluehost, you should be fine letting that subscription expire. Do you remember registering the domain at Fast Domains?

Yes, keevansoul.com is the correct domain. That is strange you found it at Fast Domains…I never registered it there, don’t even know who they are, and that never came up when I registered?

I do plan on maintaining the Premium bundle with WordPress, so hopefully no issues will arise. Thank you for answering my question. Is there anything I could / should do about the Fast Domains to check that out?

    Thank you!

I found this through the WHOIS record for the domain, which can be found here:

    http://who.is/whois/keevansoul.com

It’s basically a driver’s license for your domain that provides some basic information including where it was registered. Do you remember registering it elsewhere? I would just double-check with wherever you registered the domain to make sure the payment details are up-to-date, and the domain doesn’t expire.

So that is me…I thought I just registered it through bluehost, I guess that’s where I was directed when I signed on with them. I’m still confused now. What happens when my bluehost acct. expires? I thought I got the free domain with wordpress.

Do I have to pay Fast Domains to keep my domain at wordpress too? Even with the Premium acct.

This is just way confusing for me.

You do have a free domain credit through the Premium bundle, which you’re currently using to map keevansoul.com to your site.

The issue here is that the domain was originally registered elsewhere. Then, you “mapped” it to your WordPress.com site. At that point, Fast Domains is your registrar, and WordPress.com is your host.

With some registrar, you can transfer the registration. So, you could move the domain registration to another registrar away from Fast Domains. However, WordPress.com is not setup to handle incoming transfers. The only way to register the domain at WordPress.com would be to first cancel the domain from Fast Domains and then register it here. That would result in several weeks if not more of downtime and the possibility of losing your domain.

The best way forward is to do the following:

    1. Maintain the registration at Fast Domains. If this expires, your domain will stop working.
    2. Maintain the mapping upgrade/Premium bundle at WordPress.com

    Does that help to clarify?

Yes, that clears it up. But one last question…
So if I lose the keevansoul.com domain…I still have the keevansoul.wordpress.com domain…correct??? In other words, people could type in the keevansoul.wordpress address and get to my blog, is that right? The keevansoul.wordpress.com is chosen as the primary address in my settings.
This is just a travel blog, I’m not trying to make money here, and don’t want to spend more than I have to, to maintain it.
If this is all true, and I keep the wordpress.com address, then after a few weeks or whatever, I could then re-register the secondary address with wordpress, assuming it is still available? Correct?

    Many thanks!!

    Hey Laurie!

Correct – your site would still be available through keevansoul.wordpress.com.

If this is all true, and I keep the wordpress.com address, then after a few weeks or whatever, I could then re-register the secondary address with wordpress, assuming it is still available? Correct?

If we cancel keevansoul.com from your site, you could theoretically re-register it once it becomes available for registration. However, please note, this can take weeks or even months. Once we cancel the domain, we have no control over how long it takes before it becomes available again for registration. If you would like to move forward with this route, please reply back to confirm!
