Will import over write existing posts?

I have a self-hosted wordpress blog and a wp.com blog, both running 2.5.1
I would like to get the content from the wp.com blog and merge it into the archives of the self-hosted blog, but I am concerned that doing a straight export/import will over-write posts on my self-hosted blog.
Am I worry over nothing?

I have two wp.com blogs and am considering merging the content of the two, but first I have to answer the same questions you have posted here. Will one overwrite the other. That would be no good. And if not, will they merge according to the dates and times they were posted. That would be good.
Did you ever try it or find an answer to this question?

Is it possible to tell WordPress to overwrite? When I update my site, it duplicates me pages as ‘pagename-2’ and doesn’t tell me about it, this messes up everything. If it can’t overwrite, then I have to erase all content before important the new xml file? To be true, I develop my sites on my Mac, where I have installed WordPress, and then want to synchronize the installation on the server by importing the new or changed content through xml import. If it doesn’t overwrite existing content, what to do, then for synchronizing?

I think you’re in the wrong forum and need to be over at WordPress.org; our blogs here on WP.com won’t work that way, but there might be a way to do this on an independently-hosted blog. WP.org will have the answer.

The answer is that it won’t overwrite – I’ve tried it on both a self-hosted and a couple of WP.com blogs to make sure and it does just add the imported posts into the chronology of the blog, with the correct dates and comments attached.
If you have multiple authors you have to make sure both blogs have the same authors, but other than that it is a case of export from one, import to the other.
Panic over nothing as it turned out :)
