I want to change my site URL, but I was wondering if my content and followers will still remain. Please do guide.

Rest assured that changing your site’s URL will not affect your content or followers. I have done this myself many times.
First things first, to add a new URL (or domain) you need a WordPress.com plan if you don’t have one already. It is included with the annual or two-year plans.
If you already have a URL/domain that you purchased elsewhere, you can follow these instructions to easily get everything up and running.

The instructions that staff-porcupine shared above are for adding a custom domain. This is what we recommend, but you can also change the free subdomain to something else.
Note, however, that once the address has been changed, the old one will be lost forever.You will find full instructions here:

I know these processes can be stressful but there is nothing to worry about.
You will keep all your content and your website will look exactly the same, it will just be accessed through the new address/URL.

I can confirm that changing the address will not affect your content, site theme, or your followers.
The only thing to be mindful of is that old links you might have posted somewhere will not redirect to your site anymore.
