when I start self-hosting, will my posts go to the top of google like they did on WordPress.com?

G is just one of many search engines. They all have their own criteria for placement and ranking.

I think raincoaster said there was a bit of a dip even if you had your mapped domain for a while – she would be the one to give you the best answer as she does blogs for a living – and is a well known consultant
