Will portfolio feature remove my home page

  • Unknown's avatar

The Portfolio option seems a brilliant venture and I currently use Tridentlite template on http://www.cyprusscene.com and it would seem to me that within portfolio I can start creating projects which will list many key articles we have written previously with a common theme..

My question is, will the visitor to my site see the portfolio page which will have replaced the current home page or can the portfolio be accessed through a menu tab or side widget.

The recent introduction article does not clarify this point and once projects have been published in the portfolio there seems no going back if the result is not what I want to achieve. Is Portfolio a catagory/page and is it part of the menu structure??

Your help and guidance will be appreciated.

    Hi there!

When you create a portfolio item and publish it, the page cyprusscene.com/portfolio is automatically created as an archive of your portfolio items. You don’t need to create the page manually. Once you publish your first portfolio item, you’ll find that the Portfolio archive page will work. Additional portfolio items will have a URL structure like this:

    http://cyprusscene.com/portfolio/item-one

    Does that make sense?

Going forward, after the page is active, you can give people the portfolio link (cyprusscene.com/portfolio) to access your portfolio. You can also place this link in your menu using a Custom Link as described here:

    Menus

Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Thanks Jeremey, that’s sounds good to me and I just need to check out creating the menu tab and then I will get started.

Sounds great! Let me know if you run into any trouble.

Thank you Jeremey the Portfolio option looks great on http://cyprusscene.com/portfolio/

The only problem we are having is that Portfolio seems to go offline(404 error) and we have to go to settings/ writing and deselect the portfolio option and save and then reselect and save and bingo it’s back on line again.

Is there something that can be done to fix this issue please?

    Hi!

That definitely shouldn’t be happening! I haven’t been able to reproduce this. The next time it occurs, could you take a screenshot and upload it to your Media Library so I can look at the error message?

    Hello Jeremey,
The dreaded Portfolio error has occurred again as you will see on this picture :
    http://cyprusscene.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/portfolio-page-not-found-404-error.jpg
This error was corrected by going into writing/settings and switching off Portfolio and saving and then repeating to process to enable it again. Can you please give any advice as to how I can stop this error from occurring again?
    Many thanks

    Hi there!

It looks like you’re using an older version of Internet Explorer in that screenshot. Is this only happening in Internet Explorer? Can you test in another browser like Chrome or Firefox?

Can you also make sure that your browsers are up to date? You can do that by visiting this site in each of your browsers:

    https://www.whatismybrowser.com/

    Looking forward to your response!

Yes you are right about this IE application on this pc Shawna and its one of a number that I use, but I have also experienced the 404 error on an Android and others have seen this on other types of machines.

My concern is how can the Portfolio switch off by itself as surely if I have saved it as enabled, it should stay that way otherwise there is a problem of a different type.

  • Unknown's avatar

Strange today I have found the Portfolio turned off even though it was shown as enabled so I did as I have done before on the PC in IE and switched it off and saved and then repeated the process to re-enable and no problem.

In fairness I then switched it off and on in Google Chrome and it was fine but in Mozilla Firefox when I switched it off and saved twice, the Portfolio was still showing??

Which brings me back to my question which is, how can the Portfolio be switched off when it is checked as enabled and saved on the blog irrespective of the browser used?

Clearly until I can solve this problem I will have to check daily that the feature is working correctly.

Thanks for the info! I’ll do some testing and ask our team to look into it!

Many thanks Shawna, it went off again today although it was shown as enabled and I reset it using Google Chrome to make sure that IE was not involved in the resetting. Its alive and well at the moment and a great feature and I will check each day to see if it goes off line again.

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually, for testing purposes, the next time it goes down can you shoot me a quick message so I can look at your error page from my computer and check some things? It would be a huge help!

    Thanks! :)

OK Shawna but if you are in the US we are in Cyprus so there is a big time difference here it is 22.30pm as I write. I will let you know next time the Portfolio goes down and leave it off without resetting. Thanks for your help.

  • Unknown's avatar

I have discovered the Portfolio had gone of-line again today and reset it as described above.

    Hi there,

Shawna let me know about your concerns with the time difference. I’m located in the UK and would be happy to help investigate this issue you’re having.

The next time this happens, could you please leave the portfolio settings the way they are and reply here to let me know? I’ll take a look at the error as soon as I can — that will help us get more information about why this is happening on your site.
