Will the classic editor be taken away?
-
Just wondering if you are planning on taking away the classic editor and force everyone to use the block editor?

Hi there,
From what I and others have experienced, it looks like the classic editor plugin will be available until 2022, however that requires a paid plan.
New users (as in, since about June 1st, or maybe slightly earlier) are forced to use the Classic Block in the Block Editor (find out more at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/), or to upgrade.
However, older users seem to be able to find the Classic Editor by going to their WP Admin (read more at https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor). I believe you can get to it by going to My Site > WP Admin > Posts/Pages, and finding the post/page you want to edit; if you go to select the post, an option called ‘Classic Editor’ should appear. Staff haven’t quite made it clear if this is eventually going to disappear, and if so, when. I think many people were expecting it to disappear after June 1st — but it’s still there (at least at the time I am writing this).
There is also an option to ‘Switch to the classic editor’ still in the block editor (under the three dots in the top right-hand corner), although again I don’t think any of us are sure how long that is going to remain. On the WordPress blog, it says this:
What other options do I have?
We hope you give the WordPress editor a try — it’s been the editing experience of choice for millions since it arrived on the scene. That said, we know some of you might prefer to avoid this change. We’re offering two options for those who’d rather stick with an older way of editing your content.
1) Use the Classic block
Within the new WordPress editor you’ll find the Classic block, which replicates the functionality of the Classic editor — that’s the editor that used to be the default until several years ago, well before we introduced the WordPress.com editor. […]
2) Opt to use the Classic editor
You also have the choice to switch to the Classic editor.I hope this helps! If you have more feedback or questions about Blocks/keeping the classic editor, make sure to head to the Forum thread https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/feedback-thread-for-the-block-editor/.

The ability to create new posts or edit existing ones in the Classic Editor will remain available in the WP Admin Posts and Pages dashboards. You do not need to use a plugin for this nor do you need to upgrade to use it.
As @writer0001 has already pointed out, the emphasis is on transitioning to the Block Editor. If you use the Classic Block there, you should have a similar experience to using the Classic Editor. https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
We volunteers are not in a position to say how long the Classic Editor will be available here on WPcom. I’ve added a MODLOOK tag for Staff to reply.
Write back to us here if you have any other question about this.

Hi there!
There is no deadline for that. For now, the Classic Editor will still be available in WP admin. You can have a look at the thread that @writer0001 mentioned above if you would like to add any feedback:

I’m sorry but you don’t get even close to a similar experience. I can resize my image but then it won’t upload into my post! Where as in classic editor I can resize and rotate if needed and it loads in straight away.
So how can you say that this is a similar experience?
I need to be able to resize my card images for my blog so that they are close up but to upload to a challenge I need a photo which is further away to allow for cropping on the challenge sites. To be able to use the Block editor I am now going to have to have 2 of each of my card images so that I can upload to WP and then the other for the challenge sites. How is this more time efficient?I really don’t know what is going to happen if classic editor goes away. I may need to find a new home for my blog. I don’t want to lose all the effort I have put into making my blog but I may have no choice.

If you really want to use the classic editor, it is still available: https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor
We also have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions
We do recommend the new editor though, and we have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/
If you have feedback that could help make the new block editor a better experience for you, please let us know here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/feedback-thread-for-the-block-editor/

Yes but for how long? Will it stay always or are we going to be forced into using blocks which as I pointed out in my previous post that the classic block has flaws.
I just feel like we who love the classic editor are just not being listened to. If we don’t transition to the blocks editor then bad luck when classic disappears.

It is impossible to say at this time for how long the classic editor will remain. At this point it is still available in WP-Admin for all sites on WordPress.com, and currently we don’t have any plans to completely remove it at a predetermined date.
