Will upgrading my account fix issue with broken Categories on my site?
-
Hi Happiness Engineers
Can you please help advise the best way to fix this problem for our WordPress blog?
https://wordpress.com/view/takeadream.wordpress.comWe divided our blog into five categories listing the five contributing authors – so that articles could be filtered by author.
Currently, these filters don’t work for 3 our authors – Steve, Tamsin and Tegan’s views bring up 404 error pages.
Would upgrading my account fix this?
Is this the only way to fix this?Hoping someone can help!

Hi there,
I believe the error happens because of the ‘ character in the url:
https://takeadream.wordpress.com/category/tamsin´s-view/it should be https://takeadream.wordpress.com/category/tamsins-view/
Try and edit the category name, and that should do the trick.
Let me know if you need more help on this.

Hi there,
@taniametalli’s answer is spot-on. You can’t have quotation marks inside a link. Those links shouldn’t have been created with the quotation mark at all, even if you included it in the category, but I’ve fixed it now for you and everything is working.
On another note, https://wordpress.com/view/takeadream.wordpress.com is not the link to your site. That is a link to the live preview of your site in the dashboard and only someone logged in as an admin, editor or author on the site can access that link. If you want to give people a link to your site, please use https://takeadream.wordpress.com/ instead.

Hi you clever people – thank you so much for helping identify (@taniametalli) and FIX (@kokkieh) the problem.
I should have thought of that! These links worked for years, and then suddenly broke though I’m not sure how they worked in the place with those apostrophes.
Anyway, I just want to say, you’ve made my day :)
All the best to you both

If they worked before with the apostrophes it could be that a recent update of the core WordPress software changed that behaviour. It really shouldn’t work with apostrophes, though – the only punctuation that should be in links are hyphens and underscores, as most everything else performs a specific function if included in a URL.
Glad I was able to help :)
