Will WP take care of the SEO when transferring to custom domain with WP
-
Hi, i have a wordpress.com blog http://shippinginsouthafrica.wordpress.com with WP since 2008.. If i want to convert this to a custom domain via WP, will WP take care of the SEO currently associated with the wordpress.com site..??
Currently the site is receiving quite some regular hits and it is visible when any shipping or freight terms are googled.. Will that continue if i shift to a custom domain..?? Will the age of the site be affected..??
i dont want to lose the position that i currently have in the google searches.. Even if you can redirect http://shippinginsouthafrica.wordpress.com and its associated search results to a custom domain like http://www.theshippingandfreightblog.com that i am willing to sign up with WP, that also would be great..
Pls advise soonest so that i can then sign up for WP’s new Wordads..

It’s very difficult to predict how adjusting the domain name of your site will affect the search engine position of it. A lot depends on how Google views your site.
Usually though a custom domain is helpful. A lot really depends though and it’s not something that we can predict nor promise to improve through a custom domain.

Thanks Andrew, would have any guidance or tips on how to ensure this..?? How does the SEO of WordPress.com work..?? Maybe i can apply the same techniques to the custom domain which will also be mapped via WP..

Sorry another question here, am i right in assuming that by domain mapping with WP, the site will become a wordpress.org site..??
-
No, domain mapping only adds a domain to your WordPress.com blog.
If you want a WordPress.org blog, you’ll need to install WordPress from http://wordpress.org/ on a hosting provider. We have some recommendations at http://get.wordpress.com/hosting/
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.

Right, so if domain mapping only adds a domain to my wordpress.com blog then won’t the seo that was on the wordpress.com blog be the same..?? Or will that be changed..??
Now another question is that if the domain mapping only adds a domain to the wordpress.com blog, then i assume that the behaviour will be same as the wordpress.com which means there will be only certain plugins that will work with .com and the plugin’s for wordpress.org can’t be used here..??

When you map a domain to a WordPress.com, 301 redirects are used. Visits to your old blog URL will be redirected to your new, custom domain name. However, please keep in mind that we cannot guarantee with 100% certainty what another company, like Google, will do regarding search engine ranking when you make a considerable change to your blog.
If you haven’t already, I would suggest setting up Google Webmaster Tools, so you can see diagnostics and direct advice from Google about how your site is listed in their search engine results:
